I was working on my pc late yesterday afternoon when my Waterfox and Palemoon browers fucked up. Then all my programs disappeared from my start menu. So I go into C drive to add all the programs back and it's like they all got uninstalled. Went to control panel to uninstall them all and it said no because they were not there. Ran ccleaner to remove them all, it worked. I started thinking a virus? but I have not been to any new sites nor did I install anything new. I ran 3 anti virus programs and malwarebytes and my pc came up clean. So I started reinstalling and some worked but not all. It will not let me reinstall codww and a  few other programs I use.

So I guess a wipe is in my near future ( tonight or tomorrow). Sucks to wipe, so boring!!!

Maybe check disk for errors and run memtest before you do a reinstall.

I had a same sort issue in the past on W7 quite similar but worse, everything would not respond or say it didnt exist. After multiple restarts and troubleshooting the same continued. I was convinced it was corrupt

Backed up everything, reinstalled W7 on the same HDD and got back to normal.

I'm still using the same W7 now, not an issue since

Hmmm sounds like some kind of ransomware

Have you tried to show hidden folders and files ? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10

Not only that but there may be a portion that has now been set to write protected meaning you can not write to that portion...

If you have a user account try deleting that https://www.onmsft.com/how-to/delete-user-accounts

I have been attacked by ransomeware before. They wanted a large amount of bit coins deposited. I sent a message to them, " better luck next time asshole, I have multiple backups. No money fo you hahaha)

Ransomeware is when they change all your files names and hold them hostage for money. When I got attacked it was the worst one to get, ykcol. It was encrypted with military x 10 encryption. Still there are no decryptors available. I keep looking now and then.

After tomorrow everything will be perfect again when I wipe my pc.

Sorry to hear that you got in trouble with your PC. Can't help much.

Could be a hardware default as pointed out by @Tw33tle_Dee. If not already done, you should check your disks before reinstalling. Just to be sure.

So the wipe is complete.

It turned out to be an issue with Waterfox latest version. Tested it by wipe, install waterfox, then going through the registry and pc removing anything that had to do with waterfox, pc is now fixed. Going back to older version of waterfox.

Now the taunting act of all the reinstalling of all the programs and codww. I'm looking at a couples days cause I am still cursing at what I went through today.

I am very stubborn when it comes to finding shit on my pc. I hate wiping, I usually go looking for it and find the issues and sending them to hell with my message,

"Yo who's yo momma, gotcha bitch"

I take it you had windows updates disabled so system restore was not an option at the time?

I used Waterfox like 3/4 years ago when it was one of the only x64 browsers at the time, secure or not it has many flaws and turned out to be slower.

I mean like the latest Firefox has built in adblock, trackers and such. If you want to make it extra secure just install noscript etc

I thought Waterfox was dead, Chromium was picking up last time I heard

I use w7 ultimate. Got the last update on may 29th. I have always turned off windows update and windows firewall since the 90's.

For some reason my system restore was only saving one date (present one) which is when all the shit happened so it was useless.

Barf at firefox and anything to do with chrome. I use waterfox and pale moon.

Waterfox is not dead. I just did latest update about a month ago.

using image software  like Arconis  is the fastest way to wipe  repave OS.

another note always set a restore point before  installing anything

and keep written records of them

I use macrium reflect for image software but it could not work because the image I made was after my pc messed up.

Same thing with system restore, for some reason it was only keeping 1 restore date ( after my pc messed up ) the rest were not there.
