Free ones I use are .. Avast and AVG been using both for years at the moment Avast is on my desk top and AVG is on my laptop and my missus laptop. either of these work great and i have never had an issue. I hope this helps.

As KaptCrunch says remove your old one first. Also download from there own sites or use a secure site like Cnet.com

Yep, Malwarebytes is decent.  I used to use them for a long time, now I use Bitdefender.  Cost is relatively comparable but I get more devices with Bitdefender.

Avast is a good choice. It is helpful when online because there are websites, that seem innocuous at first when doing searches looking for info, that if its known to contain malware it will prevent it from opening. And no I dont mean porn or other shady sites. Certain providers will do it also.

After the attacks on various levels that go after official distribution points... which has happened several times in the past... who is to say that even reputable sites havent been hacked or are using hacked software. Sucks that things are this way but high tech criminals are pretty sophisticated.

Best thing to have is a good backup that can be restored from a recovery disk.  Windows 10 has a backup built in but never used it as I find it a bit lacking in features.  I use Acronis, but there are free backup programs out there.  The down side is that you need enough HD space to hold your backup, but with a 5TB usb external drive running at about $100-125 these days it's well worth having.  Just make sure that the backup is some what recent if you don't have it running on a scheduled time.
