We did, while working in the gulf. Chopper blades sag while idling. Unless you wanna step out like Vic Morrow, I'd recommend it. Rule of thumb, if you walk up to a shut down helicopter and your head barely clears the end of the stopped blade, you still might want to crouch while boarding.

Dang near dinged a young German sailor at Nordholz Naval Airbase, Germany back in the late 70's with the main rotor of my OH-58A.  I landed to refuel and he got really close to the rotor disk as I was shutting down. Once I stopped rotating I showed him that he no clearance at all as the blades flap at slow speed a lot.

I would say ask Vic Morrow his thoughts on this question but he isn't available right now to respond, besides who would even want to risk checking out which way is better? Not me

When I said the Gulf, I meant Gulf of Mexico, we were working on Chevron rigs off the coast of Mobile. Dinky little things, one gas well, one control room/galley, & a helipad the size of a card table. Flew out in a little Bolkow, no creature comforts. And yes, you kept your head down. Pilot didn't cut the throttle much, touch & go.

I've learned a few things about helos during my time around them:

No flares at an LZ.

No helmet without a chinstrap connected.

Eye protection is highly recommended.

Stay away until instructed by the crew to approach (they will usually come to you to tell you).

Small tree branch strikes will ground a helo in 10 seconds flat.

Duck a lil' bit ... and stay the hell away from the tail rotor.
