...gets me outta bed to find shelter at 2 a.m.  If it continuously stayed on the ground, it will break the record for the longest track in U.S. history.  It also possibly set a record for strongest gate-to-gate wind readings recorded.  It also set the record as the first tornado to travel across 4 states during its time on the ground.  Prayers for the people of Mayfield & everywhere else impacted by this monster.

It ripped through a nursing home & an Amazon facility before devastating Mayfield, Ky & striking a candle factory.  Still had a huge radar signature as it bore down on my location, passing overhead.

Glad you're safe @Timmah!.  Are @ANGU5 and @Gatorgirl okay?  They aren't far from Mayfield.  Such a tragedy.  :(

YES, such a problem, these monster storms!  And with climate change (the earth warming up) more and more and worse and worse storms (and droughts) to come, bless our hearts.  Amazing that at one time there were crocodiles in the Arctic, for example.   And then there are those other times when the earth has frozen... aren't we lucky to be alive during a Goldilocks time on earth?  Not too hot, not too cold, just right.

Quote

Our planet appears to be an oasis in the vast reaches of space. Neighbouring planets offer little hospitality, and even though we’re edging closer to landing humans on Mars, living there would be extremely difficult. Earth is where we are finely tuned to live: it’s not too hot or too cold, but just right—like the porridge in the story of Goldilocks.

I am a big believer in shelters - bomb shelters, tornado shelters, even just a beefed up room in the house with tornado proof structure as a safe room to run to.

Quote

Geologists and paleontologists have found that, in the last 100 million years, global temperatures have peaked twice. One spike was the Cretaceous Hot Greenhouse roughly 92 million years ago, about 25 million years before Earth’s last dinosaurs went extinct. Widespread volcanic activity may have boosted atmospheric carbon dioxide. Temperatures were so high that champsosaurs (crocodile-like reptiles) lived as far north as the Canadian Arctic, and warm-temperature forests thrived near the South Pole.

Another hothouse period was the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) about 55-56 million years ago. Though not quite as hot as the Cretaceous hothouse, the PETM brought rapidly rising temperatures. During much of the Paleocene and early Eocene, the poles were free of ice caps, and palm trees and crocodiles lived above the Arctic Circle.

If you're in a building, you want to shelter on the NE side of the structure, as the tornado is coming from the SW in almost all instances.  Of course, if it's what looks to be an EF4 - EF5, it might not make much difference if you're above-ground.  Almost 50 years ago, another massive tornado completely devastated another town not too far from here: Brandenburg, KY.

I remember talking to a guy who survived it, while we were on a job site in Brandenburg in the early 1990's.  This tornado system's path was similar- almost parallel- to this now known as the 'quad state tornado'.

I heard from Angus & GG, they're fine, just without power. Glad you're ok, Timmah.

The next door county from us.. Just 20 minutes away.. We eat there all the time... And two others hit on other side of us.. We were so lucky... Mayfield is destroyed... So sad... We're lookin at possibly a while without power as multiple main transition lines are down... Good luck to those affected and prayers for all....
