Yeah, when I started with a small department at age 20, they didn't require a college degree. However, they ended up paying for mine. The large agency I retired from required a degree for employment, and higher degrees for certain ranks. Personally, I don't believe you need a college degree to be a cop because most states/agencies require annual training and education that meets or exceeds college course studies (law, etc.)

Character would be paramount, imho.  Having been in customer service of varying degrees- with & without degrees - not taking what some random stranger says personally is a requisite for equanimity & sanity.  Some places do great; others need to filter for temperament.

That's part of basic training, but some cops slip through the cracks and never get a foothold on it.

Not just LEO's, any public service field, where interacting with the public is a central component of the job.  Nursing, gas stations, White Castle... seeing people for what they are & handling the situation to make it as sm00th an interpersonal interaction for all involved, while not taking it personally, is integral, crucial.  For yourself & whoever else.  Reading a person or persons & using benign manipulation, mirroring, empathy... just as part of the 'job'.  Psychology courses, maintaining detachment... yadda yadda...

I agree with you. Beyond basic training, I was further trained, educated and experienced in behavioral science. The human being is a myriad of progression throughout life. What we choose to do with that training, education and real-world experiences as individuals makes the difference and defines us.

Yeah, yeah... which goes back to 'character' as foundational.  Even a well-meaning, ignorant person is gonna at least not fuck it up further than an educated fucknugget with unresolved issues.  =D

Bad thing is we have millions pouring over our border, and their culture is not one of compassion.

Call it karma. But later they caught the guy. Sent him to jail. And he was then killed by another inmate.

I was joking...

One chief over here is complaining because the new graduate recruits don't like dealing with nasty people who say horrible things and what is worse they have to work shifts!!!

The Job is f*cked|!
