Last year I ran a bunch of Cat6 at my place (almost 800 feet) in anticipation for a fiber upgrade. While it unfortunately looks like my provider isn't going to get their fiber line to me until 2023, 🤬 I began putting ends on the runs I've made. Here's the difference going from wireless to wired. I can't believe in 2022 that internet speeds like this still exist in America. Granted, I am outside of town, but still on a paved road. Now you all can see why it takes me forever to download a map I don't have!!

Oh wow that sucks. I believe it's major mark that has some issues like that because he lives outskirts of the town. Hopefully they get some good lines out to u before all the wires u ran  is obsolete

Eh, cat6 will be fine for me for me as long as I live here. It's probably overkill over cat5e honestly. My ISP will likely never touch the theoretical bandwidths of 10gig, and if I ever decide to configure any sort of home server I'll be fine there too. The cables perform flawlessly on my 5mbit connection though 🤣

Crunch, I agree, its a terrible connection. I am connected by ethernet to a router that is supplied from a DSL modem. This is the fastest speed available to me right now (5 down, 1 up). Ironically, they call this "High Speed Business" and I think it's $50/month. No other ISPs around here except for over the air, which I might look into but not excited about the higher pings that come with them.

Provider is just some rural telephone company. They've branched out into fiber but unfortunately my area looks to be the last in their service area to get fiber. Right now the dsl is 5/1 mbit and that's the highest speed wired connection available. 🥴

One of my friends, who lives in Tx was in much the similar situation: Rural, shitty internet.  He rented  high capacity, then offset it by erecting a tower & transmitting to some nearby family members & friends to offset the cost.  Don't know if that's doable in your area.

There is a seemingly very viable OTA provider that a lot of my neighbors have. Seems like they are happy with it. Initially I was under the assumption that I would get fiber here in 2022, but then my isp published their road map for the year and it looks like my area's not going to be reached this year. Now that I know it's going to be at least a year without fiber, probably more, I will probably look into this OTA provider. End goal is definitely something fiber based, so I don't want to lock in too much time and money on a different solution. I know fiber will be here some day; it's all about how much patience I have!

Fiber is a mile away from me now, but it's a different ISP and they have a "handshake" agreement not to come into my ISP's territory.. 🙄

Thankfully ping is king when it comes to FPS games; if it was download speed I'd be screwed!

When we had our house built I had Cat 6 installed in office, family room and every bedroom. Woot!

Good decision; there's never a cheaper time to run cables than during construction, and it's so worth it! I did some runs that I might never use but I had the cable and it was easy with the studs exposed so thought why not.
