Curious to see what others think about this gun. Not sure how easy changes can be made, or if this is a hot button issue, yada yada yada. Console chat in game says "we are always trying new things", so I figured may as well bring it up. I have some other comments/ideas for other guns as well if anyone's interested.

By the way, this is not meant to be an attack on anyone. I have nothing against an M1A1 user in general, I just think there's room for improvement.

I don't use it personally but it is a fairly popular one that I pick up everytime I try to thaw a teammate. Any improvements I would suggest less Piles of guns to pick up when you hit your thaw button.

I admit I die a lot but a lot of times is because of picking up someone else's  guns when I am thawing.

It is handy sometimes to get a gun off the ground, but yes it is super annoying when thawing. I think most people would agree with that. Distance thawing helps but the most unavoidable situation is when you are trying to proximity thaw and distance thaw at the same time.

Only solution to this I can see is if it's possible to separate the "use" key and the thaw function. That would be a huge and probably very polarizing mechanics change though that would take a lot of getting used to.

All stats such as RoF and mag size are pretty easy to change in cod games. So thats not an issue.

As for separating the keys. Yes it would cause an uproar because a lot of people have their use key set to 'always on' so to speak. So they dont have to push a button.

Wait a second, how does one set their use key to always be on? You mean you could point at a frozen player and it would instantly begin thawing? How do you set that up and how does it work with other interactions like picking up weapons and opening doors? This is very interesting

Its a console command. I think its +activate. Never used it myself since I found it kind of annoying. To turn it off it would be -activate. This is cod4. I have never tried it in cod5 but it is worth checking out.  It would act as if you were physically holding the button down at all times.

I've never been a fan of how fast the carbine shoots. Completely unrealistic and overpowered. It's gone from a gun that nobody ever uses to one that players spray and pray their way to kills. It should not shoot as fast as an MG42 and it does.

Thanks for the info @KaptCrunch. However, sounds like I would be annoyed at having it bound.... picking up guns as you walk over them sounds like cruel and unusual punishment lol. I was imagining something more like the button is "pressed down" so that it works for point and thaw, but you still have to press it to pick up a gun.

BTW, still haven't looked at your internet solution. But also still skeptical cause the copper line supplying me is literally at its physical limits for bandwidth 😆

Definitely my sentiment. I think a RPM reduction would be the most accepted nerf if the gun was to get one. Looking at the small turnout for the poll above (not even people voting no to a nerf) leads me to infer not many players take issue with the gun/care enough for a change to be made. 🤷‍♂️

Not a lot of the players that play on the server regularly are active on the website. This is probably a waste of time. I appreciate the effort no less.

The only plus with that gun is all you can do is spray and pray as for long range accuracy goes it sucks.  Ill take a regular rifle any day for accuracy over that gun.

There is a bind you can put on before the game that allows you not to pick up other guns. Trouble is if you run out of ammo your fucked , all you will have is your knife lol. I used it a longtime ago and I cant remember it but I know a lot of peps still could tell you what it is.

it is a 30 cal, just less powder. As far as it shooting faster than an MG, its got a much shorter stroke. Like a fully auto Glock, cycle rate is super fast. Just my 2 cents.

I am no expert on weapons by any means, but here are some considerations I quickly found online: M1A1 was only semi-automatic. The later M2 variant was select fire, and from what I see its rate of fire was 750-800.

With this in mind, the OW version of the M1 is pretty much an M2 carbine. If 750-800 is the RoF that the OW mod sets it at, it is probably historically accurate in this context. I would like confirmation on what the M1 in xiow servers is set at for RPM.

According to the WaW wiki, the M1A1 does 40-30 damage in MP. Here are some other guns in context. These numbers are from the wiki.

  • STG44: 30-20 at 535rpm
  • PPSH41: 22-14 at 1250rpm
  • MP40: 40-29 at 535rpm
  • Thompson 40-20 at 735rpm
  • Type 100 40-20 at 750rpm
  • MG42: 30 at 937rpm
  • Browning: M1919 40 at 625rpm
  • FG42: 30-22 at 937rpm
  • Type99: 45-33 at 625rpm
  • DP28 45-35 at 469rpm
  • BAR 45-35 at 375rpm

Interpret these numbers as you'd like. What I see is the M1 is a weapon with the mobility between an SMG and LMG, but the damage and range of an LMG that shoots like an SMG. (To be fair the STG is pretty similar, yet weaker)

I don't know if these numbers help or hurt my argument 😅 but for some reason the gun does get used a lot. Personally, I think the MP40 silenced and the gewehr silenced are the best guns in the game, so I guess I should be fine with people liking the M1 more! I even like the STG over the M1 I think.

One final consideration: We are talking about weapons in a hardcore server; most guns kill in one bullet anyway. So this is all probably a moot point. Interesting nonetheless. It definitely shows that the M1 could probably kill faster than any other full auto gun if player health was not set to half or whatever it is.

And if we want to be technical and compare real life calibers, let's look at the only other stock automatic rifle in the game, the STG. It shoots a 7.92×33mm Kurz, a considerably more powerful round than the .30 carbine. Yet in game the M1 is stronger than the STG. This is even at base semi-auto mode. I have to assume this is due to balancing; STG was always fully auto, M1A1 semi. So I guess real life comparisons don't work well.

In video games, no. Each particular weapon in a class is meant to fulfill a specific role and the design of the weapon itself is just for looks.

Yes, I was primarily replying to Spark's real life comment above. But yeah, your comment and my analysis above kinda proves that the carbine is punching well above its intended class restraints right now...
