This is what bad spark plugs look like.  I suspect these might even be the original 1989 ones ... Now the engine stays running properly which has allowed me to diagnose a fuel supply problem as well.  It's a project ....

MIxture looks waaay rich; depositing that much carbon fouling is a function of incomplete combustion due to either excessive fuel/air ratio or insufficient temperature & heat for complete combustion...kinda like on the cooler periphery of a campfire where the border between temperature & fuel/oxygen intersect....but I'm stating the obvious...because its fun.

i detect the valve seals dripping abit of oil, question Axe  does it have blue smoke out the exhaust pipe after a cold start and goes away after engine warmed up ?  also how much power a 3 cyl engine give  lol  or just 3 cyl black plugs .....misfiring ? don't toss those plugs for to make a tool out of them by breaking the porcelain out and braze air nipple so can do reseal of valve stems and test valve (carb)/piston ring(crankcase) leakage same time by using compressor to keep valves closed on compression stroke for not take head off engine while remove valve spring to replace seals. my expierance if 3 cyl look like that the piston rings installed upside down

lol.  Those plugs are completely burnt away.  The base electrode has lost about 16th of an inch and the top arm is about half the original thickness.  This makes for really weak inconsistent spark which in turn causes incomplete combustion and carbon deposits.  The gap on these was more than 4x spec (.044).  Other than the fuel and carbon deposits, these are typical for a motor not run for 8 yrs followed by repeated turning over without actually starting.  There is no oil deposit on those plugs, nor is there any blue smoke or blowby.  Just carbon.

@MtDeW Find any other engine with OG 1989 plugs and you'll see the same.  Pick your brand.  lol.

And ya ... these are from a 460 (7.5L) gasser.  It's a man size engine.  You wouldn't know anything about that Crunch.

I'll show a video of the fuel supply problem next ... once I fix it.  lol. (Still not 100% positive what is causing the problem ... but I'm gonna throw a few parts at it as they all need replacing to be reliable at this point anyway.)

First car I had was a '68 Ford Fairlane; bought a Hanes or Chilton & proceeded to tear down the engine to the cylinder head, to replace the gasket, nerding out along the way, happily absorbing all the wonderful explosion diagrams & specs of that & other systems as I worked my way through that wonderful beast.  LOVED LOVED LOVED  the room & comparative ease with which you could rebuild a vehicle, part-by-part & have the satisfaction of knowing that car - YOUR CAR- inside & out & that you did it.  Learning & proficiency was the true reward; even if getting a dependable ride to function acceptably without paying an arm & leg for it was your initial motivation.  And what you also quickly learn - even at the tender age of 16- is that there are a LOT of people...people whom you would initially be inclined to believe because of their age & smug proclamations....that are absolutely full of shit & only speak for self-aggrandizement...most often knowing they are feeding you garbage....which then soon translates - when applying that newfound lens of dubious consideration- to an initially bewildering discovery of just how many full-of-shit motherfuckers there are running around this rock with you every day...but I digress...hope you're having fun with the renovation!

I have never heard of Motomaster spark plugs.

Only place I can find them is on ebay.  Appears they were sold by a tire company chain in Canada years ago?

Ya.  You guys are right.  Those plugs must have come from Canadian Tire here in Canada.  They are still some sort of shot though.

@Timmah! I also owned a 68 Fairlane with a 289 engine.  (4 door.)  It broke in half one day when I was driving it down the 401 in Toronto.  I stomped on the breaks and the frame broke behind the engine and the whole front end dove down.  lol.  Fun car though.  I've been through my share of old cars and resbuilds.  69 Dodge Dart, 72 Chev Nova, a 67 and a 68 Mustang ... I think that is it for oldies.  Then a bunch of mid 80's cars which all sucked to repair.  I quit doing my own rebuilds and repairs when I got my 1st Honda ... opened the hood, didn't recognize a thing ... closed the hood and called my repair days over.  lol.

But yes, we are back to figuring shit out.  I figure I know more about the fuel supply system in this truck than the average mechanic.  Oh and this fuel system is stupid and unnecessarily complicated.  Thanks Ford.

Yeah, I've also owned a Chevelle, & my tie for fav:  A '65 Pontiac Catalina, black with fins; looked like the old '60s Batmobile.  389 Hydramatic; could squeal tires from a standstill.  Even had a couple cops race me on some back-country roads back in the day...hilarious to have a cop pull up beside you and gun his engine....

5 liter changed all plugs and oil change then had to go back and have some plugs changed again. Then went back had 1 converter change and then had thermostat changed not sure yet if it's right it still says using a lot of fuel when idle.

have one of these

infared thermo gun  check each exhaust port heat the lowest is the leaky injector

a torque conveter  or CAT  changed ( if used non-OEM need to remap the fuel curve )

other check the intake plumbing for obstructions  to the air filter. oil change how did oil smell / feel ?

driveabliity  ok  or lazy to respond to thottle

have  the FLEX FUEL  option ?  read owners manual

might be gas and alcohol mileage reporting

or fuel gauge issue   for say engine runs great doing wheelies    LoL

cause gas stations add more antifreeze in fuel this time of year

trans.PNG.ae0434e17c4e68d3c297987c074b7501.PNGIf it was me I would be looking at the linkage 1st, then the internal parts, as in the shift forks and the synchronizers...known for wear and causing issues.

As long as there is not any excessive body flex

Those can be a pain in the ass to work on. My old 84 TBI had a single pump in front of the tank switcher thingy mcbob down on the frame. Piston valve in the Tank switcher seized between tanks so I unhooked the damn thing and the rear tank. Ran it on the front tank for a couple years then "accidently" whacked a deer with it. Truck was rusted out really bad underneath. Got more than I paid for it out of the insurance.

That tank switcher module is damn expensive. Could have bought 2 new tanks and a fuel pump for what that stupid thing cost and a new pump was something like $280 from the dealer.

I'm going to look at an old 87 6.9L idi diesel with my neighbor (cousin) here in a couple days. It's been sitting for a while but it has zero rust on it.
