Come on Pete. It is hardly a "necessity" in the U.S. Certainly there are some headaches that come with the great liberties American citizens enjoy, but the fact is that the vast majority of Americans go through life never having a "need" for a firearm. And I will gladly accept the risks associated with my liberty, it's worth it.

It is a great story. This ''kid'' did what he thought he may never have to do, but had the training to do it. There is nothing wrong with teaching your kids the proper way to handle a firearm. I was trained as a young "kid'' myself how to respect and use a firearm. We have what we call the second admendment for a reason. We cannont surrender that. Glad that it worked out well for this YOUNG MAN.

Awesome story. Sad that this kid had to do it, but great that he had it in him to do it too.

all 4 of my kids were raised with and learned how to defend themselves and there loved ones via the use of firearms .... I hope they never have to use this training however it gives me peace of mind that they have the ability to defend themselves and there family if need be.

YES YES Hans, like LOM said. This saved this whole family, and this is a classic example of how proper education and guns can make a difference in the world.

In this case a kid with a gun saved himself and his siblings. I would call that a yes yes.

 
I grew up in Illinois, and learned to shoot there. The first time I shot a gun was a .22 cal that my Great Grandfather made, and shot it when I was around 6 or 7. I still have it and shoot it every once in a while. And got my Hunters Safety card when I was 12. It is good to pass down to the younger generations the responsibility that we need to have when handling a firearm weather for sport or for protection.

I agree. Grandpa & dad taught me how to shoot. Everybody I knew had guns & knew how to use them. Never gave it much thought until the Politically Correct arses came on the scene.
Chicago has finally admitted to being the murder capital of the United States. Rahm admits to at least 5000 murders since 2002, and Chicago bans gun ownership. Hmmm, do you think gangs & drugs might be the problem, rather than guns alone?

Let's face it, many people are offended that we teach kids to be responsible with guns and would love it if all firearms were outlawed in the US. But like the old saying goes, "the day they outlaw guns, only outlaws will own them" is completely true.
 
Yesterday in Phoenix a 14 year old boy was babysitting his three younger siblings when a woman rang the doorbell. The 14 year old refused to open the door because he did not know her. A few minutes later they heard a banging on the front door and the boy saw an armed man trying to kick the door in. The boy rushed the three younger kids upstairs, went to his parents room and got out his dads pistol. As the intruder burst through the front door, he saw the boy and pointed his gun at him. The kid got off a few rounds and hit the intruder, who is now in critical condition in the hospital but expected to survive.
 
Obviously these people knew the kids were home alone and we'll probably never know what their true intentions were unless they find the woman and she admits their plans. Had the boy not reacted the way he did we would be reading about a few dead or kidnapped kids instead of a wounded intruder. This kid is a hero.

I saw this in the news this morning. I commend the family for teaching the kid how and when it is ok to discharge a weapon.

Ok, so I was the one who started this whole shit storm by saying that he was probably illegal based on his name. I was wrong in the assumption and it was pointed out, but still hold a hatred of illegal immigrants no matter race, religion, nationality or creed. If you want to move to any country, follow the laws and do it the right way. Don't hide and make me waste my tax dollars educating, looking after you health or feeding you. We have enough people in the US that need this assistance that are rightfully deserve the benefits and are not getting due to the fact of the overcrowding of our prison system and schools with people that dont follow the rules.

I am not a racist. I have many friends of many different races and nationalities. What I DO NOT LIKE however, is an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT! They are called ILLEGAL for a reason.....they are in our country illegally, i.e. they have broken the law!! Get the hell out of our country. If you want to come visit, fine, visit and then go home. Or, if you are going to stay, at least tak the manes to do it legally. That is how most of the countries in the world are run. Do you think that any Eurpoean countries would let me come over and take up residence and take advantage of their Social programs? Hell no. Why should we allow this, then? I was watching a news story the other day here in Texas about a high school where 1 out of every 3 students was here illegally. Seriously......33% of the students were here illegally!!! WTF is that ? And we pay for that shit. No, just go home. I won't say anything bad about the Mexicans that are here....they work very hard and do things that many of us would not do, but I would like to see all the illegal aliens get kicked out. As for Obama allowing illegal immigrants to stay here? What the Hell.....what a freakin' joke that is. Just a political ploy to get the Hispanic vote.

You are making a valiant attempt to misconstrue and distort my comments. You are the one playing the race card, not me. For me race never was an issue. Much was about illegal immigration which is a significant LEGAL issue especially along our southern border with Mexico. It is a constant national newsworthy topic without a hint of racism. It is also a major topic in our presidential elections. It's a legal issue nothing more, nothing less and certainly not driven by race.
 
I can understand the perception of racial bias because the dynamic political issue of the moment is with Mexico, a Spanish speaking nation. But do not cover me with your blanket observation or accusation of racial bias. It is unfair and a comment made out of ignorance.
 
Immigrants cover a broad spectrum of people, my parents being Swedish were immigrants. My issue is with illegal immigrants regardless of race, creed or nationality. Simply illegal immigrants. Do not twist or make it more than it is.
 
It borders on unethical to turn a legal position into racial bias. Do not presume that illegal immigration means racial bias, it simply is not so.

A terrible event has happened, but kudos to Texas for doing the right thing. Prosecuting the father for defending his daughter would have been a real tragedy.

From the article that I read on this it stated he was here legally and had a green card...He had previously been hired by this family to work on the farm from time to time...Regardless of his residency status he got what he deserved...What he did is despicable and the poor child has been scarred for life as well as her father...I commend the father for doing what he did...He had the moral right to protect his family by whatever means necessary... :)
