Hands-on With 2 New Spec Ops Levels

Hands-on with two new Spec Ops levels at GamesCom

GamesCom has arrived and has brought hands-on impressions of two new MW3 Spec Ops levels.

GamesCom officially opened for the media today, meaning that there has been plenty of news. Modern Warfare 3 is in attendance and has so far brought us news on dedicated servers for PC, various interviews and a keynote with Activision's Eric Hirshberg.

Attendees at the show will be able to see Modern Warfare 3 campaign in the Theater room, compete in Call of Duty XP pre-qualification tournaments and go hands-on with Spec Ops mode and Call of Duty Elite. So far only one Spec Ops mode has been shown and that is the Dome Survival map that has appeared in videos and hands-on impressions. However, GamesCom is playing host to the reveal of two new Spec Ops modes. One is a Survival map set in Paris, France while the other is a Mission level set in Berlin, Germany. GamesCom doesn't open to the public until tomorrow but since the media got access today, two new hands-on impressions have appeared, revealing new details about these never-before-seen Spec Ops levels.

Invisible Threat - Spec Ops Mission Level

NowGamer » managed to play the new Spec Ops mission level which is called 'Invisible Threat'. According to NowGamer, this level takes place in Germany (Berlin) and both players are separated from each other. One player is on the ground dressed up as a Juggernaut, while the other is providing sniping cover on a nearby rooftop. If one play dies, then the game will end.

The player who controls the Juggernaut character has to approach and defuse nine different IEDs, the positions of which are varied each time. The sniper can use UAV and Predator Missiles to help them protect the Juggernaut from enemies.

Tons of troops will attack the Juggernaut and rocket troopers will try to take out the sniper. In one part of the mission both players will be attacked by tanks and helicopters.

Paris - Spec Ops Survival Level

GameSpot » managed to play both levels but produced a more in-depth hands-on impression of the Paris Survival map. As you should know by now, Spec Ops mode is split into two types of levels; Mission and Survival. Mission levels are more objective-based, while Survival levels are based on battling against wave-based enemy assaults and attempting to stay alive for as long as possible. All of the Survival maps are played out on multiplayer maps, so expect to see both Dome and Paris in multiplayer too.

According to GameSpot, Paris is "a medium-sized chunk of urban devastation where alleyways, bridges, and demolished houses made for some interesting routes throughout the map." In survival mode you'll come across assault enemies, helicopters, dogs strapped with C4 and Juggernauts. You will be able to use an in-game currency system to buy and upgrade new weapons and equipment, as shown in the recent trailer.

GameSpot managed to survive up to 13 rounds, which is believed to be pretty good for a beginner. They state that "the breakneck pacing, the persistent unlocks, and the variety of weaponry all manage to work wonderfully even as you're staying in place, which is more or less the exact opposite of how things tend to go in the quickly moving Modern Warfare campaigns."

Some highlights that GameSpot mentioned include "hiding under a bridge while coordinating with our team-mate who was going to lure out the chopper and shoot it" as well as being terrorised as soon as they heard the attack dogs barking but not knowing where they were. Another highlight that they described was "frantically running up to a second-floor balcony to unload our shotgun against the juggernaut that was too slow to match our pace."

And that is that! The two new Spec Ops modes certainly sound enjoyable, and if you're attending GamesCom then you'll be able to try it out for yourself.
