Mixed news roundup

Black Ops Dedicated Servers

In the coming days we expect a lot of new Black Ops content to be released, so we felt like bringing you back up to speed with what we know so far.

UK Black Ops Press Event

Last week a couple of community representatives flew out to Santa Monica for a first look at Treyarch's studio. Even though they had a great time and couldn't really find the words to describe how awesome they thought the game was, they're not allowed to talk about any details until after May 28th - this coming Friday. That also happens to be the day that Josh Olin's, community manager at Treyarch (aka. @JD_2020 »), wraps up his press tour in the United Kingdom. So expect juicy details tomorrow!

Multiplayer

Development is well underway but it's still a long road to November 9th, when Call of Duty Black Ops will hit the shelves. In the last couple of weeks things have started rolling with a couple of magazines covering the game, but also with opening the official Black Ops website » and the secretive GKNOVA6 » taking off to highs no man have ever gone before. So what have we learned about multiplayer so far?

First off: DEDICATED SERVERS. Yes, it has been confirmed by Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia (source: CVG », thanks thebigrobbyrob) as well as by this T-shirt » worn by Josh Olin, a name you will be hearing a lot off, we're sure. It's most likely this will only be implemented for the PC version of Black Ops and not for the consoles, but when more information on this subjects arises we'll be sure to hit you up a.s.a.p.

Secondly, a BAREBONES mode is up for discussion. It's something the community screamed for in Modern Warfare 2, developed by Infinity Ward. They never got to implement it (for reasons unknown), but Treyarch is currently looking into it. Barebones mode is basically a mode that cuts through all the shit, sort of speak. Nothing has been decided yet but you can think about disabled perks and killstreaks and weapons without any attachments for example. Please join the discussion about a barebone modes here » and tell the team your ideas.

Third, developers have been asking for feedback a lot. Not just for the usual like what did you did and did not like in previous Call of Duty games, but also what your ideas would be on a controller scheme for people with disabilities. So if you feel like sharing your thoughts jump the wagon and make your voice heard!

Fun fact; Some of the multiplayer maps were up and running so early that they have actually been used as campaign levels, not the other way around!

Singleplayer / Campaign

Black Ops will be set in the Cold War-era, which is a pretty lengthy period of time after second World War in which the Soviet Union and the United States played the biggest parts. Although there was never an "official" war, there were many conflicts, espionage, propaganda, a nuclear arms race and the Space Race (which words can be seen in the reveal trailer). The war stretched from the Soviet Union (Russia) to Vietnam (1959-1975), Germany (1961), Cuba (1962) and the United States... So it's hard to pinpoint what exactly the storyline will be like. The Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) did mention it will not be a Vietnam game, it just happens to take place - partially - during this infamous conflict.

You will play members of the Studies and Operations Group (SOG), a secret branch whose actions are completely deniable.

In one of the missions you will climb in a SR-71 Blackbird », the iconic spy plane in the Cold War. This plane can be seen in the Reveal Trailer. After you have taken off, you'll be providing recon from space to troops below on the battlefield.

In another mission you will be shot down in a helicopter, crashing you in the Huong River and you will need to get past the huts build right next to it. This means a lot of swimming with just a knife to defend yourself. Exciting!

OXM also confirmed a couple of interesting new elements for the singleplayer though. At one point in the storyline you will be the pilot » of an helicopter. You will not just man the turret or shooting rockets, you'll be the one actually flying the thing. This worked out great for Bad Company 2 and we trust Treyarch to make it at least as fun to do.

General news

Black Ops is the first game for Treyarch which has their focus. Previously In the past, they had times when they worked on 3 games at once but now the entire (over 200+) roster is dedicated to the development of this single game. It will release on November 9th this year for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Nintendo Wii. It's currently not known if they will be developed for the mobile market too, we're looking at you iPad!

If you feel like it, why not jump over to the Digital Warfare 24/7 forums » and share your thoughts with the community?

Hands-on Overload

Black Ops Previews Arrive

It was 7 days ago that select community members visited Treyarch studios to preview Black Ops. 7 days later and we finally get their impressions of the game.

After a weeks wait, the embargo has finally been lifted! The select community members have posted their impressions on the game as well as the press who also previewed the game in the past week.

Rather than posting extracts of each article, we will let you visit the URL's yourself so that you can sink your teeth into the wonderful world of Black Ops!

Although these impressions and interviews are mostly based on opinions and do not feature a lot of new information, it's certainly interesting to hear the communities opinion on what they saw. We've gathered that the game is purely full of epic win and will be action-packed. The two missions that were shown are called "WMD" and "Slaughterhouse".

Although Single Player was only shown, multiplayer was touched on slightly. It appears that a Barebones playlist is being developed, create a class has new features, multiplayer has been in development from day 1, matchmaking has been improved and plenty of World at War lobby features will return, this includes the "leave with party" option. Host migration will also be in the game and apparently Treyarch have a "security team" who will deal with those pesky cheaters and hackers.

It's clear to us that Treyarch is extremely dedicated to Single Player, Co-op, Multiplayer and the overall game. A lot more people are working on the game than previously before and everything has been improved, from sounds to enemy AI. It's also astonishing to hear that Treyarch will use the same motion technology that was used in Avatar, this leads them to create better character performances of which are captured by 200 cameras.

Now enough of the talk, it's time to read the articles in full!
