I am baffeled!  My mic works great for everything until I start playing COD4.  It even worked right up until we started playing and then as I am trying to talk in game it sounds like crap (so I am told).  I have tried everything, including trying a different mic, and still the same old crappy sound.  Any ideas anyone?

On board sound? Try updating drivers. Try turning your mic volume down in Windows and adjusting it up in game.

Or if your using a sound card did you disable the on board sound in your bios. I have this sound card and like it alot.
