  2. Let us Remember The 71st Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge 12/16/1944 to 01/25/1945 In December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempted to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe by means of a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp. Caught off-guard, American units fought desperate battles to stem the German advance at St.-Vith, Elsenborn Ridge, Houffalize and Bastogne. As the Germans drove deeper into the Ardennes in an attempt to secure vital bridgeheads, the Allied line took on the appearance of a large bulge, giving rise to the battle’s name. Lieutenant General George S. Patton’s successful maneuvering of the Third Army to Bastogne proved vital to the Allied defense, leading to the neutralization of the German counteroffensive despite heavy casualties. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Bulge The Germans' initial attack included 200,000 men, 340 tanks and 280 other tracked vehicles. Between 67,200 and 125,000 of their men were killed, missing or wounded. For the Americans, 610,000 men were involved in the battle,of whom 89,000 were casualties, including up to 19,000 killed. Along with the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Luzon, it was one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought by the United States in World War II All gave some ...Some gave all The forces at work here were as follows Belligerents United States United Kingdom France Canada Belgium Luxembourgish resistance The debt that we owe can never be repayed but our thanks and gratefulness shall live forever https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Bulge#/media/File:117th_Infantry_North_Carolina_NG_at_St._Vith_1945.jpg
