how much of the system memory should firefox typically use?  i'm not downloading/upping anything, in fact i'm on this site and taskmanager shows that firefox is using 6948652k of memory.  I think that's a bit excessive, especially given that i'm transcoding a dvd file using Nero 9 and that's only using 2011021k.

Yea that sounds lil high

mine only uses 126k maybe lil more or less

i know a while back firefox had a memory leak but thought that was fixed. Are you sure you are on the most current version. If so maybe try uninstalling it and reinstall it

Also it could be an addon causing the issue you should try and run it in safemode and see if the memory issue still happens. If not then most likely it is one of the addons.

I think 126kb is low... but liquid, that does sound high. In my task manager firefox usually shows about 27,000k. But I prefer to use chrome anyhow.I would just reinstall and or clear the cache/cookies, maybe even try out google chrome.

just updated to 3.6 mate.  Checked task manager and it says it's using an average of 140000k - significantly down but almost double what i think is normal.  Could it be so high cuz i'm using 64bit?

Gonna check out the addons as well for a memory leak, that kinda makes sense.

Well i would end the process that you see firefox using the memory.

Then just go to your mozilla folder on program files and it should have a safe mode

right, i ran ff in safemode and managed to get it down to an average of 91000kb/ 12% of system resources which still sounds like an awful lot to me but when i restarted in normal mode it stayed more or less the same.  All themes and non essential add ons have been disabled, i noticed that there were three versions of java running, i've disabled the earlier verions and just kept the most upto date running.  i'll fiddle a bit more.

thanks guys

well, i re-enabled add ons which i use and disabled xfire toolbar, friendbar and rss feeds and it's now levelled out at an almost static 70000kb, which ain't to bad.  Think i'll check out chrome though, been hearing good things about that.

thanks for your help guys - appreciated!

problem also is if you are browsing ... if firefox is idle then it should not be using that much memory.. but if for example you are going to a website.. OR if you are even idling on a website like our site.. it will cause the memory usage to go up because of the graphics / flash/ etc etc etc long story short.. go to google .com  dont search for anything and see what your mem usage is at:)  if rick james wants to jump in here and further explain what im talking about.. guess ill allow it this time

Hey just a note; When ever I install firefox on a pc and I do alot of it. I ALWAYS install several addon to firefox. Adblock plus

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=adblock+plus&cat=all&advancedsearch=1&as=1&appid=1&lver=3.5&atype=0&pp=20&pid=5&sort=&lup=

This is the little red stop sign with the letters abp in it. That will block most of those annoying pop ups. After being online for just a bit you can downarrow next to the stop sign top right of firefox and see how much it has blocked. You will be amazed at how much crap does not get on you pc anymore because of that.  Also I install WOT....

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=wot&cat=all&advancedsearch=1&as=1&appid=1&lver=3.5&atype=0&pp=20&pid=5&sort=&lup=

This one is web of trust..a handy little tool that gives you ratings of sights and marks them red, yellow, green.....Green is safe site to go to and works well with newcommers to the net.    As I stated that I put these on every system I do and have had no complaints or systems comming back with problems. (knock on wood)

My mem usage with these running is 145,656k

Well I hope this helps a little and as always these are just suggestions.

I am currently running two FF windows, one of which, or course, is the Xtreme idiots website, the other is wkikpedia. My task manager say its is running around 150,000k. I do, however have a greasemonkey running also for some hmm hmmm hmmm , cough, cough, scripting I am doing. so running it should be less than that.

I personally dont think that is so high considering the next item down in the memory usage is RTVscan which is my antivirus and it is using   131,000k.

and remember the percentage usage is your CPU, not your memory. Mine says I am running around 22% usage, but 140,000k is around 4% of my memory

Just trying to help, though probably not

Thanks for this bro, an awesome little program;  Get it here:  http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Network_and_Internet/Misc__Web_Browser_Tools/Apro_Firefox_Ultimate_Optimizer_Download.html

It did bundle some shite with it but only took a minute to get rid of it - well worth the hassle!
