Burglars broke into her Palmview, Texas, house Saturday. Brothers Lucas and Jesus Ortiz were "high on unknown drugs" when they knocked on her door 20 minutes after her husband had left for work. Feeling something wasn't right, she grabbed the handgun her husband had trained her to use 7 months before, and was on the phone with 911 when they broke in. Finding her armed, they fled. She shot at their truck, hoping to tag it for police identification later. A SWAT team eventually negotiated with the burglars after they barricaded themselves in another nearby house, and Alex says she thanked her husband for buying the gun she had been against owning. In Canada, people shoot warning shots over the head of the intruder to scare them off, then get arrested for "careless use of a firearm".
