  1. Pluto (with Charon) is technically a double planet. The center of mass of the binary is in the space between the two of them. Compare with Earth where the center of mass between Earth and the Moon is inside the Earth.
  2. Very nice! A friend recently told me that you'll never regret a tattoo that has meaning for you. I've designed my forthcoming first ink and met with the artist that I've chosen 2 days ago. I hope to have it done before the end of August (it has an astronomy theme, naturally, as will the next one).
  3. I've been trying to upload some images to the Photography thread that I started a while back. I keep getting an error that I've exceeded the "maxfile size directive for this site". The files were shrunk down as far as possible (1.8 mb) that I could get with Photoshop and I still get the error. The images would also look like shit at that compression level (original .jpgs were about 24Mb). What is the size limit? Can this be raised to a reasonable compromise?
  4. The guy with the binoculars and sailor's cap.... What's wrong with the nightshirt? I LOVE mine...all of them...especially the orange knitted ones. I positively PURRR when I wear them!
  5. Beautiful! Well done. Love the light trails. Love B&W too, and the macro.
  6. Saturday date night: drive-in movie, then to the drive through for a burger and a float.
  7. Very spectacular! Do you take 30-second exposures, or do you use a lightning trigger? I need to find an open expanse next storm and try and nab some cloud-to-ground bolts.
  8. We had a massive thunder and lightning event last night, including tornado watches. The lightning and booming was continuous for almost 3 hours. I stayed up until 3:00 AM photographing it. I was exhausted today, but it was worth it. The first three shots are of the same lightning bolt. The TOGA lightning detector is sensitive enough and the camera's shutter speed fast enough that it captured the pulsing of the bolt.
  9. Happy birthday my friend. Never a finer Idiot have I known!
  10. My lawn mowing this afternoon was interrupted to give the right-of-way to this amphibian pedestrian.
  11. The only part of this discussion that has me unsettled is the use of religion as a justification for holding a discriminatory position.
  12. Live and let live... Personally, I think Tom Gabel/Laura Jane Grace kicks rock-and-roll ass in either gender. ...and I think the new drummer looks really happy to be on Letterman.
  13. Nope. Sorry, I tried. It just looked like an indistinct fuzzy blob in the eyepiece, like looking at Uranus while drunk on a hazy night.
  14. I plan on going back to this one in the Autumn and capturing it in colour.
  15. ..compression that the forum uses really softens the focus.
  16. One of four farm buildings I shot while driving around at lunch time today.
  17. Yep. Japanese Beetle. We have brown/copper coloured variants here. they decimate the rose bushes if you don't stay on top of them.
  18. Another one from this afternoon.
  19. There are a bunch of these beasties out today doing their part to continue the species. As long as they stay away from the roses...
  20. I was enjoying a cup of tea on the back patio this morning when I noticed this little critter on the umbrella. Insects really are fascinating little things (as long as they're not inside the house).
  21. Another landscape of a farm with worn buildings.
