well folks, it would appear that the solution for this mystery is finding a way to illude all of us. one thing for sure that the download problem seems to only affecting the COD4 map downloads. i am not having any other problems otherwise. someone said that the location of my cod4 folder might be causing this. do you all think that a reinstall might do the trick ??? thanks, Katana

fishman, i looked under user\my name\appdata\ local\virtualstore\program files(86)\activision\cod4-mw\and there is no usermaps dir there.(i abreviated some dir's) i guess it all goes right to the program files (86) on c:\ directly and no virtual folder. Katana
-
well from some of this, is location of the usermaps dir a problem (if so i can reinstall cod4 and i will put it right on the root of the drive. but as it stands the path is c:\program files (x86) \activision\call of duty 4-modern warfare\usermaps will that help ? Katana
-
hey fishman the game is installed in Program Files (x86) if that is what you mean. hope this what info you seek. thanks, Katana p.s. what is this virtual store you refer to?
-
wow , this is so strange. it still will dload the first two or three files rapidly then it will slow down to a snails pace and sometimes it will keep slowing down to the point it will almost stops. only in cod4 will it do this so far. thanks, Katana

hi fishman, i looked thru all the config settings you show om my own config_mp and the only setting you are showing that is different from my config was the seta cl_maxpackets "100" , mine was set at 30 so i set mine up to 100 as you suggested so i went into cod4 and found a server that had map i did not have and entered and tried to dload the map and the setting i changed made no difference (same problems) are there any other settings we can modify ??? i am convinced that now that i have proven dloads are good in windows environment and dloads in crysis wars are good too, that its the settings in cod4 that are the trouble. thanks to all who are helping, Katana p.s. it also could be a setting on my computer

hi folks , well i just finished installing Crysis Wars on my system and it runs fine even with graphics all the way high. it downloads all new maps like gangbusters and i mean really really really fast so it has to be an incompatibility problem with win7 (64bit) and COD4. now what to do about that ? do you all think a simple reinstall of COD4 will do it or what ? strange that in the windows enviroment the downloads are pretty good considering i have a slow connection (i have the comcast econo service) its still faster than DSL and the downloads for crysis are pretty good. it has got to be some problem with cod4. please tell me what you think. thanks again, Katana

hi all, kaptcrunch how can i tell if it is an r1 or r2 ? and yes it is an onboard card. cobra i will try to dload crossloop over the next day or so i am game for letting you have a remote look at it. fish i have no router its a direct connection from computer to modem. now someone said something about this simply an incompatibility problem with cod4 and 64bit. i will test that i am going to install crysis wars right now in a few minutes and see what that does.. thank you all for the help, Katana

well i have done all that i can think of and so far no sucess. i updated the bios and followed the instructions as per ASUS. i updated the lan drivers also turning off all green features. it still has the same problems as when i started. really do not know what to do. i am going to write another email to ASUS and see what they have to say. strangely i am not the only one to be having this and similar problems. many are making many post on varing forums in the net complaining about this card. too bad. i will never know why ASUS did not just use the Intel lan cards as they have for so many years. any ideas please post. thanks, Katana

hey folks, good news, asus provides a software package in their driver disk that comes with the MB. on this disk is a utility called AI Suite II, on this utility there are a number of options which includes an updater and the updater will aid you to update cpu , bios et'c. so anyway i had already downloaded the bios update from asus . i ran the utility and followed the steps so at present the bios is updated to the latest version. now i will go into cod4 and find a server that has a map i do not have and see if my download problem is fixed. i will let you know. thanks, Katana

how do i send a pm to you and not have everybody notified of it . it seems that the pm's here want to sent an invite or copy to everyone, making the pm not so pm as it were. how can i send a private message to you ? thanks friend, levern

well guess what , i googled how to do the commands in dos to refresh my memory. the command at the command prompt is : cd c:\ then you will be at the c:\ root then type cd temp2 (in my case) then bupdater.exe and its supposed to run as it did but evidently asus made this file as a 32bit instead of 64bit as i need so it would not run. now i have to find a 64bit bios update. any ideas ? thanks, katana
-
hi kaptcrunch, it does not have one, this time when i built i left it out. i only have a dvd drive and of course i have usb's . do you have a dos trick up your sleeve ? thanks, Katana

hi again , well i was able to install the new chipset drivers, the new lan card drivers but i can't figure how to install the bios update. the bios update utility says that the exe file needs to be run in dos. i opened the command promped and i can't remember how to even change a dir in dos. the last time i used dos was around 1996. the other file for the bios update is a .rom file. i am stumped with this one. help help. thanks, Katana

hi kaptcrunch, sorry , i thought i had said what os. i am using windows 7 (64 bit) and i have all windows security features turned off (i would never install them if microsoft would let me.) you have been very helpful. so all i need to do is d-load the bios update and install it ? btw after reading your last message i once again went to the net and found the very latest drivers for the eithernet card, uninstalled the old ones and reinstalled the new (it did not help) sorry to say. also thanks for looking up the update, i am currently downloading every new driver i can download. i will post the results after i install them. thank you, Katana

hey folks, its a built on eithernet card and its on my brand new asus m5a99xevo motherboard and the net card is realtek 8111e pcie gigabit lan controller. if you have any ideas on how to fix this thing i will appreciate it. i would rather have the built in card working the way it should. thanks, Katana
-
hey folks, i think that there is no hope for this pos realtek eithernet card. i don't know what posessed asus to put the realtek card on this board. last asus board i had used an intel 1000 pro and it had great software emulation and it would download like gang busters. so i have decided to disable the realtek and install an intel eithernet card in one of the free pci express x1 slots. new egg sells the intel 1000 pro for $30.00 so thats what i will do. btw asus will get a nasty gram about the use of the realtek cards in their best boards. thanks ya'll, Katana

hi again, i disabled all green features and i still have the problen. thanks, Katana

hi warface, i dare say that i will never use windows 8 unless they give us back our KDE Desktop as we are used to. bill gates and his crew will always find a way to fuck up a good thing. they overly complicated everything in win7 and said they made it better (Ha !!!) making things take more steps to do something does not make something better. taking steps out makes it better, i am with weezer, stick with win7. see ya friend, Katana

the net card is a realtek pci e gbe family controller, and i am hooked up to a comcast provided modem which has been working fine with my old machine. i also put update drivers for the net card. thanks, Katana

hey folks, well as things go with any new system it takes a while to iron things out. in this instance it happens to be a download problem. now when i am using firefox my downloads are slow but steady. as with my old machine the downloads were not at lightening speed and can be attributed to my low end conn. that i am forced to have because of low funds but its way faster than dsl. now the particular problem i am having is when in game and trying to download a new map. now with my old machine (same connection) i could download a new map in around 3 minutes and i would enter the game with no problem. now as we all know that every map has multiple files and with my new machine when i start to download it will dload the first file in a few seconds, but when i hit the second file the rate drops to 10 or 12 kb and slows to an hour or more for the next file. now if i go to he console and type /reconnect then it starts the dload agan and the second file fairly fast then it hits the next file and again slown to a snails pace and again if i type /reconnect in console it will dload the next file fast and so on untill i get the map and enter the game. well i really should not have to do that. i have tried to do everything i know to fix this to no avail. i loaded an update driver for the lan card modified settings et'c. help help help !! thanks, Katana

hi friend, i agree with google. just restore the computer to its last known good state. on win xp you will find that option under help and support. then reinstall the upgrade carefully.on win7 i am not sure where to find that option, but its probably something similar to xp. hope you fix it, Katana

hi hxtr, those Pci express slots are set up this way. if you hook up one vid card in slot 1 then it runs with 16 lanes on the slot open if you hook up another vid card in slot 2 then it divides into two sections 8 lanes for slot 1 and 8 lanes for slot 2. slot 3 is a pci express x 4 lanes and is best used for a dedicated SSD setup for gaming and a seperate operating system or a RAID setup. see you, Katana

Hey Folks, well i have been saying for months now that i was trying to build a new computer. so after several months and literally buying my new machine one piece at a time i have finally achieved it. so i guess i will start with a spec list ; computer case : coolermaster haf 922 with (2) 200 mm fans front and top and a 140mm fan rear. motherboard : asus m5a99xevo main board up to 32gb of mem @ 1866 mhz amd am3+ socket (2) pci express 2.0 x 16 x 8 (1) pci express 2.0 x 16 x 4 (2) pci express 2.0 x 1 (1) pci slot the motherboard also manages fan speeds and temperature and many other features (it does everything but cook for you) CPU : AMD FX-6100 six core @ 3.3 ghz per core am3+ socket l2cash = 6mb l3cash = 8mb can be overclocked RAM: corsair vengance (4) 4gb ddr3 [16gb total] 1600 mhz with cooling fins can be overclocked to 1866 mhz SATA: (6) 6.0 gb/s (2) 3.0 gb/s VIDEO CARD : nvidia gforce gts250 1gb memory 256 bit user interface this card will soon be replaced with an nvidia gtx580 POWER SUPPLY : viotek 850 watt modular DVD: lite on so thats my new monster. i am still going thru the new machine blues trying to tweek it and getting running the way it should, but it should round out to being a good machine. see ya'll around, Katana p.s. this machine can be built for under $700.00 if you buy it over a timespan and watching the sales or good deals.
