Short track veteran Jorien ter Mors is now an Olympic champion on the long-track side, winning the gold in the women’s 1500m as part of a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Dutch.
It also marks the third medal sweep of the Sochi Olympics for Dutch speedskating; the men have already done that twice in the 5000m and 500m.
Ter Mors (pictured) only picked up long-track speedskating relatively recently in the 2012-13 season. Today, she not only won but shattered the Olympic record with a time of 1:53.31 – burying the old mark of 1:54.02 set by Anni Friesinger of Germany in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
Ireen Wust has now won her third Sochi medal, taking the silver today after winning the 3000m and earning silver in the 1000m.
Lotte van Beek knocked teammate Marrit Leenstra off the podium in the final heat to grab the bronze. The top non-Dutch skater was fifth-place Yuliya Skokova of Russia.
As for the U.S., they remain medal-less in these Games. Heather Richardson led the Americans with a seventh-place result, followed by Brittany Bowe in 14th and Jilleanne Rookard in 18th.
