Parties are on their face divisive and intended to be that way. Both parties rely in part on creating partisan squabbles to catch the public eye. Partly to be the first to support something which may be popular, and frequently as a 'red herring' to take the public's eye off of things that are happening which may not be very popular at all. People used to be involved and at least somewhat patriotic. They used to READ a lot more than now. They used to 'fact-check' for themselves and were less prone to charismatic speakers and more thoughtful about making their choices BEFORE voting.

It is like when you have to wear uniforms at school so every one looks the same so no one can express themselves or be an individual.
