My mother-in-law gave me my father-in-law's rifles just recently. He passed away last winter. I have always deer hunted in states that did not allow rifles for hunting. Now that I live in Maryland I can use them. Since I have always used shotguns, I do not know much about the rifles that she gave me. I want to take Pondscum Jr deer hunting, he has never been and has just completed his hunter's safety course. He is 12 and is around 85 pounds wet. I am not sure what he can handle, the rifles that she gave me are listed below. What would be good for him to use. We will be hunting in a wooded area. Lucky to see more than 25 to 50 yards.

Winchester

Model 94 Lever Action

30-30

Iron Sights

Remington

Model 700 Bolt Action

243

Leupold Scope

Without a doubt. Lighter for him to carry, kick not bad but teach him to hold it firm against his shoulder. I's an old standard woods gun for deer hunting. A 150 t0 180 grain bullet would work nicely.

243 is flatter shooting and generally for longer shots in more open country.

By all means sign him up, and you too, in a Hunter Safety course if available in your area.
