One night my dispatch received a call via 911, but before the caller could speak it was disconnected. Dispatch traced the call and while trying to call the number back dispatched myself and a fellow officer to the address, as "an unknown situation". She explained the circumstances. We responded arriving at the same time to the home.

It was a damp and dark night, near 10:30. We could hear clearly hear the waves breaking on the shore.

Not knowing if this was a break in/assault or medical, we quickly developed a plan and approached the home. We did not see a car there, and the home was completely dark. We circled the home and found no evidence of a break in. We were able to see thru the windows and saw the phone on it's base. Nothing looked disturbed that we could see. Beginning to feel pretty sure this was a medical call, we were near the moment of entry, ready to break the front door in. Just then a car came down the gravel road. I opted for talking to the driver as they stopped across the road. They were a neighbor and said they knew who the people were that owned the house. I told them what had happened. They told us what we needed to know.

"The husband passed away 2 weeks ago. His wife was staying out of town with a daughter, and there has been no one in the home for at least a week."

I thanked her for the information. Randy (the other officer) and I looked at each other. The chills are back as I share this story. And yes, true story at that. We had to just leave. What you are feeling if you are scared is what we were feeling as we backed away from the home, a little frightened, not feeling as tough as we did when we first arrived to deal with the possible intruder.

Happy October...
