Well I would like to go on record as saying "Thank you Canada" for refusing to be a signatory of the Hague Convention on Private International Law.

This means that, in order to complete my divorce, I first have to prove legally that I was ever married (I was married in Canada)

Because they didn't sign on, the Canadian Government does not issue "Apostilles" so I have to travel all the way to Toronto to get my marriage license "authorized", then "legalized". The authorization is at some Government records office in the queen's park area and then I have to get the legalization done at the Mexican Consulate in Toronto and then the US Consulate. Jeez this sucks!!!

So it seems I have a couple of days to come in Toronto...Thanks a bunch guys CryCryCryCryCryCryCryCryCryCryCry

Ok Pete

This is the deal. I have a marriage license from Ontario which has the raised stamp on it. That used to be good enough but now the document has to be certified with an "apostille" which I guess is French for certification. Its a whole other document that is attached to it that certifies the other document is real. Its all bullshit really - just another excuse to scratch more money out of us poor working stiffs.

Canada signed the treaty but they did not sign up to the part that the apostille falls under. Mexico did, the US did and even the UK did, but for some reason Canada did not so every document has to be authenticated and such.

I have a couple of choices.

1. Use a "service" like RedSeal. This will cost around $450 CDN. This will all be done in the mail and take around 10-15 days

2. Take my chances with mailing it to the Office of Documents Services in TO, then getting it back, then mailing it to the Mexican and US consulates in turn. The whole process would cost around $100 CDN but take around 3 months.

3. Take a trip up to TO, do everything in a couple of days and it still costs $100 CDN, but then there is the gas, hotel etc

So any way I am a little screwed, but I have to do this otherwise all the months of preparation for this separation will have been wasted.

BTW, thanks for the "good shit" offer. It's been  while since I partook of the "good shit"

Let's see what happens. I will keep the CA contingent posted here.
