hey ,

maybe some of you remember my last topic about modding a ATI Radeon 6950 to a 6970 ?

just FYI they are still running fine at crossfire with really awesome performance in combination with my 4 Ghz processor...

the only thing I didnt like was the temp behaviour and the noise level of these cards...

this will work for all of these graphic cards :

ATI Radeon 6970,6950,6870,5870, 5830, 4890, 4870, 4850, 4830, 3870, 3850

nVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, 9800GTX+, 9800GTX
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 285, 280, 275, 260+, 260

nVIDIA GeForce GTX 465, 470

nVIDIA GeForce GTX 580, 570, 480

nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, 560 Ti

important:

you will loose warranty if you are going to do this

this is not a cheap solution but it is really worth it....

just be sure your case is big enough because this is a really big cooler LOL

the cooler:

Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME Plus

at newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186043&cm_re=xtreme_plus-_-35-186-043-_-Product

you also need some RAM heatsinks to cool some parts of the card

there are 5 different to order for the different cards

the stock coolers made a lot of noise under heavy load and the first card had almost 50°C/ second card 45°C on idle and almost 75°C/70°C at heavy load while gaming or benchmarking

though I have a really well vented case with 11 fans....if you have less fans temps might increase a lot more

some tests I read reported temps of 85°C+

after installing the new XTREME plus my temps are now at 36°C/29°C on idle and 50°C/45°C while gaming and benchmarking

both cards running fine at 950Mhz/1450Mhz maxed out without any issues

if you think about changing your gpu cooler have a look at this beauty

here are some pics of the install Cool

the cooler:

exploded cards:

you have to install the heatsinks there

have a nice day :)))

Cool pics bro!

I bought the Accelero Extreme 5870 for my HD5870 a few months back. The issue I had was that the thermal sticky tape on the RAM sinks was crappy...basically, it wouldn't stick. On top of that, the Extreme 5870 was known to have very good cooling for the GPU, but POOR cooling for the VRMs...so I never bothered putting it on...

My question...how are the VRM temps on your cards?

Nice setup really...

EDIT: I'm EYEing the launch of the HD6990 on March 8th...and the GTX590 on the 15th... might be interesting! I'll have to grab a better monitor, as I'm still running 1680 X 1050...

I might go Crossfire 6950s, depending of the price of the 6990...time will tell. The new dual-GPU cards will hopefully cause price drops on HD6950s HD6970s, GTX570 and GTX580s...

Hopefully, performance numbers for AMD BULLDOZER will come out soon too!!! Good thing my upgrade money isn't quite there yet...

LOL I know what you mean...

these RAM sinks was the part I didnt like at all

here you dont have sticky tape its kind of glue to fix the RAM sinks...

worked much better like I thought

with the temps I am not sure...

my gpuz shows me four temps ...all of them are fine

all of them around 50°C under heavy load

Nice temps on those VRMs...on the Extreme 5870, the VRM temps could go up to 90 degrees C...too hot for my taste! I guess they had cheaped out on the VRM sink. That's why I didn't install it...good thing I paid $49 only for it!

For the glue thing...I bought thermal Adhesive, (thermal epoxy)...it's good, but irreversible...as my card is XFX and has a lifetime warranty, I need to be able to take the sinks off, put the original heatsink/fan combo to RMA if it fails down the road...

I have no idea what kind of glue this was to fix the heat sinks but I had to clean one VRM and install the sink again and I was able to clean it with a rubber. worked pretty easy so it should not be a big deal to put the original cooler back on.

still not sure which temp on gpuz is for VRM. but all temps are cool so I don't really care LOL

but you are right 90C is way too much
