Seagate (about two to three years old) are reporting a lot of problems. The issue was the devastating flood in Thailand. It crippled WD's production (as most of WD's production was in Thailand) and Seagate took advantage in that time frame. However majority of parts production was also in Thailand and got impacted as well. So Seagate ended up using marginal parts which is now resulting in failures and returns. Having worked in disk drive industry, my advice would be to never but the top of the line in terms of space. Try to get the family which does not go all the way to the top in terms of space. They squeeze out space by essentially increasing TPI (Tracks per Inch). Not much revolutions happening in the HDD industry so you have to think that TPI increase will have a cost (Reliability).
