On other forums I've checked, pretty much everyone who's read the books has loved the series. A few minor quibbles here and there maybe, with some scenes not featured due to budget constraints (hey it's not a Hollywood movie), or plot threads being told in a modified way, or small character details being changed. You know, the "it's not exactly like the book" type complaints. But yeah, overall it seems to be regarded as a masterful adaptation.

I searched but couldn't find any mention of this HBO show here, so I want to recommend it to everyone. It's just finished its first season (10 parts), and it was a class act. The series is a medieval high fantasy, set in a fictional world with supernatural elements (which are pretty low-key). It's based on George RR Martin's 'A Song Of Fire And Ice' series, with the first season covering the first book (I haven't read any of the books btw). It's a story about powermongering lords and their noble families who rule over their homelands but answer to the king who sits on 'The Iron Throne'. The kingdom is seriously unstable on the inside, but also being threatened by mysterious outside forces. Instead of being a straight good-vs-evil story, basically all of the characters are flawed in one way or another, and some of them are just fucking vile. I think it was the producer who called it something like 'Sopranos meets Lord Of The Rings', which is vaguely accurate (well ok, not quite). There's sex, nudity, harsh language, gore, and all the other shit that makes it qualify as an HBO show - so it's not for little kiddies. But the script is major quality, the acting is excellent, the production is spectacular for a TV series, and I was hooked from beginning to the end. So if you get an opportunity to watch this, definitely give it a shot. BUT, if you've already seen it, could you please put spoiler warnings around any major plot points you might want to mention.

Yeah I'm in Australia, where ping is lousy at the best of times (~230), but now I'm floating at around 300 on the MW2 server, which can make it difficult to get on there at all. Ouch. Though ping on the FTAG servers 1 + 2 is still ok.

Who the hell wants to do a pile of bones like that? No, I prefer them when they're in the bloat stage, when gasses build up inside, which can make various orifices a nice tight fit. It's also when they've got the strongest flavour. Unfortunately they don't last forever, so I always make sure I've got a fresh one brewing so it'll be ready for when the last one's done.

Nutcutter I agree, never realized how cheesy it was till it was removed. Never mind cheesy, it just messes with the gameplay. Snipe one person and your position is totally given away. Sure, the sound of your rifle might do that to an extent, but nothing like killcam does.

Hehe indeed - happy 4/20 everyone. Mind you, in my part of the world it's 20/4, so we never get a 4/20, but I can go along with the American format for the day. I shall do the appropriate thing tonight then (4:20 pm will be too early for me though).

@Toothpick Hey I'm not whining - at least it's not just me whining. @PT-Bama Yeah I'm thinking in particular of a couple of sniper-heavy maps on the FT servers. The kind of maps which, if you've got under 10 players, often take an hour or two to finish. Which can mean that half the rounds are ended by the clock running out. When you're playing a game like this, everybody seems to be whining - especially old XI members. Players will be calling to have the map removed from the server, and many of them will just leave the game. But I think to myself that it would be a pity to lose these maps just because they take forever with four to a side.

Yeah well I'm still pretty new here, but I had an idea - but maybe it's been thought of before. There are some nice big maps which play well with plenty of players, but just drag when there's only a handful. So I'm wondering if it's possible to add a feature to a mod where larger maps would be assigned a minimum number of players needed to play it. That is, a particular map would require, say, 12 players, or it would be skipped. So can this sort of thing be done?

Sonovabich This is the server we change gametypes on every 2-3 weeks, no specific gametype ever does particularly well so we now change it regularly to keep the interest up and the server populated, so if anyone has any ideas we are open to offers Fair enough, SOB, I didn't know about the regular change (as I said, I'm new). Well then I guess my thought on the ft/ctf arrangement would be to raise the flag limit (to say 5 or 7) on the ctf, to help even out the game lengths.

Hey I know I'm new here (to the forums anyway) but why not make this a CTF only server, without the alternating freezetag? There are already 3 FT servers (plenty of choice), and the FT games on this server usually play for a lot longer, so the CTF games just seem like little intermissions. Either that, or at least make the flag limit a lot higher. It's just that the server doesn't look like it's been getting much traffic, so maybe some tweaking is in order.

Bosun, Andy, Prple - your names ring a bell, and I'll pay more attention and keep an eye out for you. SgtHarry, I've just been running Xfire (well actually iFire on the Mac). The Milwaukee Home for the Seriously Mentally Deranged sounds like my kind of place, heh. But I can only find one XI ffa server with iFire, and there doesn't seem to be much going on there. Anyway I'm not generally much of a ffa kind of guy - I like an interesting team-based game. I used to play CTF on COD2, but I really like Freezetag. As I said, I'm into gameplay, not realism (not that ffa is realistic). We could be firing bouncing orange cannonballs from our pistols for all I care, as long as it plays well. But I'll read up more on these forums about your various servers and see what else is happening. Bosun, yeah Oz is pretty much Ping Hell. I've been sitting on around 240 (I'm in Melbourne). You get worse than that? Ouch. But yeah we can't let Nitro and those other Kiwis get away with, well you know, just being Kiwi and shit. And it seems the bastards get better ping than we do - that's just wrong. Andy, yeah my playing is improving, but I'm not a Jedi yet. I'm no noob anymore thankfully, though sometimes I still play like one. Get me on the wrong map at the wrong time and my k/d can be fucking dreadful, but I've been managing to hold my own for the most part lately. Overall I'm doing about average. And hey PingLo, you're right - playing on the Mac is a bit wrong. I've got nothing against PC's, but I need the Mac for other software. I'm half thinking of picking a PC up for games, but I don't know that my budget will allow it for the time being.

Yeah so if you've been playing the XI COD4 Freezetag servers, I'm sure you've already run into me (and frozen/thawed me a few times at least), as I've been quite a regular there lately. I joined the forum about a month ago but only now have I got around to posting. Love the mod(s) - I'm not a realism nut, as I'm just into games in the pure sense. And freezetag is a very nice variation on the theme. It really makes you think about tactics. And of course I've been enjoying your company via voice chat. Great community of players, with good attitudes and senses of humour. Unlike most here, I've been playing on a Mac, not PC. I need a Mac for other stuff, so gaming isn't top priority. Mind you I do love a good game, but there's not much decent around gaming-wise ported for that platform. Fortunately there's COD4, and it plays pretty well on my machine (but not with maxed-out settings). Though sometimes on a hot day my little 2.4Ghz 13" Macbook Pro can grind a little on the high-polygon maps - and it's Summer here in Australia at the moment, so there's been a few of those hot days recently. But hey, at least I'm not playing it on a console (I mean how the hell does anyone play an FPS without a mouse?). I used to play a bit of COD2 a few years ago as well, and would like to revisit that game too. But I haven't found my old copy of it - maybe if I look a bit harder. Anyway, I'll be around, and posting a bit more I guess. Cheers, WTF.
