@@ChknFngr I totally agree. See Facebook, Google and others. They don't care about your privacy. Especially Google says: your private data is secure. Of course. Recently they started to encrypt the traffic between their data centers. "For your security". In their case It's all about their money. They are not only interested in protecting your private data. But what Valve does is completely different. They make enough money with Steam. I've heard that they receive a commission of up to 30% per sold game. There's no need to use your private data to earn more money. For me it would be ok if they use the data from my DNS cache toplace in game ads for products I am interested in. Why not? But it's not ok how Google or Facebook handle my private data. And regarding the NSA, GCHQ and all the other Intelligence: there is nothing you can do. If they want your data, they will get it. You can make life hard for them by encrypting mails, chats or using anonymizing services like the Tor network. But they will get you. True story: A german student announced a "walk" to one of the NSA locations here in Germany. He didn't call it a protest, just a walk along their complex. A few hours later someone rang his door bell. Guess who... The US military police. They advised him to rethink his walk to avoid "unforeseen consequences". A few minutes after they left, the next few people rang the bell: the German state police. They advised him to rethink his "walk" too or that he should register it at least as a protest walk with the local authorities. This scares me.

The ports to forward are: Default voice port (UDP in): 9987 Default filetransfer port (TCP in): 30033 Default serverquery port (TCP in): 10011 Default tsdns port (TCP in): 41144 Depending on your Router it is more less easy. Mostlyyou will find a menu like "Network", "NAT" or "Port forward". Something like this. You need to know the local IP address of the machine your TS Server is running on. you have at least the Windows firewall. Simply allow the teamspeak traffic incoming and outgoing. the laptop should be fine.

The DNS system is very complex. But there are a few parts that are important to know in this case: 1. The resolver cache is written to your RAM. A reboot clears it 2. Each DNS entry has a Time-To-Live, an expiry date so to say. (In seconds). Every resolver cache will store the DNS for exactly for the given time. DNS is like a phone book. Let's say http://google.com has 1.2.3.4 as phone number (IP address) and a TTL of 300 seconds (5 Minutes). The first time you visit google.com your PC will ask the name server that is configured in your network settings. (Mostly a server on the internet or your router Is configured to be your DNS-Server and will forward your DNS-Request to servers on the internet that you or your provider have configured on the router.) The DNS-Server asnwers your question with: google.com = 1.2.3.4 Your PC now does the following: A: it contacts the phone number (IP) and shows the website B: it stores the phone number in your local cache but Google allows to store this number for only 300 seconds only So if you visit google.com again within these 300 second your PC will use the local cached IP address. If you visit google again after 301 seconds again your PC will search the local cache but won't find the IP as the TTL has expired and the cache entry had been deleted. You PC asks the name server that is configured in your network settings. This is (simplified) how a DNS resolver manages DNS requests. All work the same way. Your local resolver in Windows as well as a resolver on the internet. There is no need to be worried about your privacy. Have a look at the bunch of cached entries in my last post. I did nothing more than open Firefox and visit yahoo.com. You will not find more information than "oh, he visited yahoo". Yes of course, the would see if I visited a sex store. But what did I look for? Strings? Bras? Toys? Porn? Gay stuff? Simple answer: they don't see it. They now I was there, that's all. Big secret I am sure that they are not interested in this information. They would lose reputation. @@ChknFngr You are anxious about your privacy because they see domain names. C:\Users\Administrator> They can see - the website(s) I visied - other records for servers that I connected to because there are embedded ads, videos, scripts or something else. I guess they try to find domains of suspected websites that provide updates for cheat programs. But this is useless if the tool connects to IP addresses instead of domain names. This wouldn't appear in your DNS cache as there is no resolving of a hostname needed. AND Valve would not only use your DNS cache to ban you. The cahce content is one piece of a puzzle to help determine a hacker. and FU @@BUDMAN

The DNS cache is not your browser history. Your browser history contains complete URLs of visited websites, your DNS cache contains only the Domain and IP addresses.

Setting up a TS server is easy. On Windows as well on Linux. There is some network configuration needed (port forwarding and possibly firewall settings) I if you don't plan to make the server (more) public and accessible to everyone you can ignore most of the permission settings and use the default. Just protect the server with a good password. Don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions

Valve has no effort from reading your DNS history. What should they do with this data? All they can see is the website names I visited. And their IP addresses. And now I should execute a /flushdns every time before I start Steam? I guess they do exact one thing: Searching for suspicious websites. I can imagine chat they have an internal score for each player. Watch your profile and you will find the "VAC status". All they could do is to use this data for in game advertising. (Was planned for Counter Strike years ago) I see many blogs complaining about this but no serious website. (Until now). But that the integrated web browser (Chrome) is totally outdated doesn't matter? It's not possible to secure it by deactivating java or flash, no option to deactivate cookies? That's what makes me nervous, not a scan of my DNS cache. Most of the bloggers who are complaining about this - I guess - use - Facebook Recently removed the option to decide who can find you or send you friend invites and messages. To make the social part more user friendly. Of course. Another example: Do you have an Android mobile? Install the Facebook app and read the requested permissions carefull. They could also ask for root access to your mobile. - Google Chrome (Yes, the most secure browser atm, but they don't do it just because they want to make the digital world better) - an iPhone Apple redirects a lot of your HTTP traffic through caching proxies. To compress the data and so on. Of course, they do. And they have access to everything you read on the web. Not only the top level domain. Each website link, article, picture.. - an Android phone Just one word: Google. They all collect much more sensitive data (and make money with it - mostly) than Valve does by accessing your DNS cache. Again: All they can see is the top level (hxxp://google.com) or sub domain (hxxp://play.google.com) you visited. And the IP addresses. That's all.

And open the doors for hackers? lol I guess they removed it because they want to sell the newer games like Ghosts. And they don't want to waste time or money for to detect new cheats and updating the clients any longer. Next step is shutting down the master servers for CoD 4 and 5 There are thousands of MW players out there and still enough hackers. So it is useful to keep the servers PB protected. My two cents.
