If anyone has windows 7 you may have noticed ur ping in game spike up causing massive amounts of lag. Well last night I was working with X-Ray and he helped me fix this issue and asked I post about it.

We first found it could be QOS packet scheduler.  I removed QOS  from network settings and also did the local group policy to set the default from 20% default to 0 and it did seem to help a little but the lag  was still there. Then he X-Ray found this link…..

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1043281&highlight=Multimedia+Class+Scheduler

Which says to do this….

* Stop and disable the "Multimedia Class Scheduler" service
* Run regedit and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Audiosrv"
* Double click on the entry "DependOnService" and delete the line with "MMCSS" from the text box
* Reboot and enjoy lag free games

This so far has done the trick. I played a couple games and the lag was gone and my ping stayed at 54 to 59 but no more 120-160 spicks like before.

Hope this help anyone having the same issue or if you went back to XP or dreadful Vista (hahaha jk xray) because of it.

If anyone has any other hints please share.

Thanks again X-Ray... you are a world of help bro.

   Thanks, but further reading at the link demonstrates the issues that can develop when you start disabling services:

Update: doing this will likely induce audio issues such as crackling, popping, stuttering, and skipping. My final solution was to leave this service enabled but disable it's network throttling component (if you already did the first fix you should undo it and re-enable the service). This resolved my audio issues caused by disabling the MMCS while keeping my games lag free. This is not a solution if you are not experiencing network issues. If you are experiencing audio issues only, you should make sure the MMCSS is running. The best way to test if you have this problem is to disable your sound device in Device Manager and then see if the lag persists. If it does, you have some other issue. If the lag goes away, re-enable your sound device and try the following fix:

Quote:
Leave the multimedia class scheduler service running, but disable its network throttling "feature":

* Open regedit
* Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
* There will be an entry for network performance throttling, default value is 10; set it to FFFFFFFF hex (willl look like 0xFFFFFFFF to the right of the entry)
* Reboot

yea i probably caused the damn issue tweaking my system. I disable whatever is not needed like Terminal Services and others.. lol

but mine is fixed. I'm leaving it alone for now. Thanks for the info if it breaks again I will try that.

I wa hoping there was some solution because this has been very annoying not to mentioned making it tougher to kill you all :)

Changed the setting, but yet to see results later. I only noticed this, though, in COD2. My ping seems constant in COD5.

ok, i tried this, and it didn't seem to help me. it must be something in my router (lynksys E3000), or ISP (suddenlink cable). i ping the server @53ms with 0% packet loss. (cod4 acemod server). i seems as though it just does it if I am using internet on other machines while gaming, whcih doesn't make sense since I'm on cable. any other ideas for this ping spike in win7 64 home prem. we do have issues from time to time with low down/up speeds, but this has been going on all week with spikes. when it's normal it's between 50 and 70
