"I know farm/field workers, janitors, roofers that make min wage, and i think 7.25 is too little for that type of work.'

Nobody puts a gun to anyone's head and forces them to take a hard labor job for min wage. If a laborer can't find a job where they live that pays them what their skill is worth, they should consider looking elsewhere for work. There are plenty of opportunities right now in North Dakota for  people with nothing more than a high school diploma to earn $100k, if they are willing to work hard (and relocate to ND).

I'm willing to do that. what jobs are these that you speak of? 100k a year I could retire by the time I am 45 or maybe younger.

So this was my labor story over the last 10 days....

I need a girl in the office and the only real skill she needs other than the ability to get to work on time is proficiency in Excel....that requirement was in the ad...

I got no responses....starting at 17.00 and hour and after 90 days full benefits..

I need 2 oil drivers and the only skill other than the above and a cdl with hazmat endorsements  is half a brain...well, I got applicants but most wanted cash (because they are collecting unemployment) thus they are scammers and don't belong here...

I had a retired cop with the right skills but he wanted 28 an hour and to be laid off after winter so he could collect....he is making 24 an hour cash now and the extra 4 he says would cover his taxes...

So...in summation, I have 3 full time and not low paying jobs open but no one wants to make an honest living...

I understand some people have situations but damn....

And on the other side of the coin...no one is entitled to cell phones, cable tv, internet, Netflix and all the other bullshit monthly expenses that take the biggest part of monthly income...I paid my dues, cut corners to get to where I am finally able to not worry so much and sleep at night by hard work and long hours....I have zero sympathy for lazy ...none at all....

So...there are plenty of skilled labor jobs available in all industries across the board so if people want to better themselves they can by learning a TRADE!!!  But most just feel that lifes not fair and they are no getting the things they are entitled to, so they milk the 99 weeks of unemployment.

Raising minimum wage is NOT the answer....break the lazy chain and lets educate people in all forms of skilled labor and you'll see things turn around....

I have enjoyed this thread and believe most of the relevant points have been made.

I do not support minimum wage, I didn't finish college and never worked for minimum wage . It was like 4.25 when is was in high school and my first job was at an Auto body shop when I was 15 for 5.50 an hour.  I worked a summer job refinishing gym floors in college that paid in the 20's and we worked like 60 hour weeks. Anyway I worked in factories, small businesses, and even for temp services for more than minimum wage, and usually got a raise in the first 6 weeks.

Deerejon finally said it about lifestyle choices, I feel the same way!

I have a longtime friend who is older than me, hell his daughter is my age, he works as a farm hand on a local farm. He made 12000 last year.  His paychecks were taxed but with such low income he would get it back as a rebate. Now that said he didn't starve, he has no DL as a result of DUI's  so he had to rely of family for rides to the store, etc. but he still had tv no cable, cell phone not a smartphone, internet out in the country so satellite, and he always had money for food, beer and other herbal medicine.   He did get some perks from his boss like buying meals and rides to and from work

Did he deserve more money for what he was doing? Hell yes he did but he had less options due to his own actions.  Many aren't willing to live the lifestyle of their wage, but instead live like they are in a TV show.

I feel like some people are veering off topic here about minimum wage lol. Ill agree that Yes $7.25 for minimum wage is a bit low. But I don't think doubling minimum wage is wise either. I have worked at Outback

where you get paid waaayyy less then minimum wage. Like $2.15 an hour. Now if you wanted to make more than that you would have to work your butt off. Grant it if you ended up not making minimum wage for the 2 week pay period they would reimburse you the money that you should have made to make that minimum wage. I also worked at a sports store where I made minimum wage. I ended up making $7.75 while working there over a 9 month period. I didn't feel that I needed to get paid more. But I look at the way things are going now, and I would have to agree that $8.25 an hour is a good minimum wage price. But minimum wage is set for the ENTIRE  nation. Depending on where you live depends on how much more you make. That is because cost of living is more expensive in other parts of the US. If fastfood employees want to get paid the $15 an hour I want to see them actually using real uncooked hamburger meat making a patty and actually flipping them. I want to see them peeling and using a potato slicer to make the fries. <<< that of course will never happen. Also fastfood restaurants are there for the HighSchool and College students so that they can still work and go to school. Because they are unlike most business fairly flexible with school schedules. But most of the employees that are complaining about not getting paid more is because they are wanting to make a career out of working fast food. Ok well that's fine if that's what you want to do. BUT I don't want to hear the complaining because when you started working there you knew what the possibilities were when you started. Honestly even if youre there manager of a store you cant really making a living unless maybe of course you are living by yourself in a cheap apartment. Anyhow those people that are complaining (adults) they are complaining but yet don't wanna go to school to become better. You don't have to take 12-18 hours worth of college classes to get an education and better yourself. I myself did not get any sort of scholarships. But I am working a fulltime job to pay for the things that I have and pay for a couple of classes a semester. It can be done, its hard no doubt. But it can be done.
