black bears are very docile and non aggressive.   But, a mother with cubs is another story. Very risky just being around them.

There are more bear attacks than you think by black bears with and without cubs. Some guy in New Jersey got killed last September and partially eaten. He even took pictures of the bear stalking him. What a way to go. Like coyotes, bears are learning to live closer to humans so encounters are becoming more common. I live in the middle of town and last week there was a dead coyote in the street around the corner from my house. No bears sightings yet but they're around as are the moutain lions.
