This walkthrough aims to all players getting errors from punkbuster. It is important to know the exact message you get being kicked.
Once you went through this walkthrough you will have all necessary logs to get proper help from
i3d-support or other forum users here.
This walkthrough is written for Battlefield 2 - but can be applied aswell to all other games using punkbuster and its new pbservices.

1. Browse to your bf2 installation
- C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\ - depends on your localisation & installation, path may vary!

This walkthrough is written for Battlefield 2 - but can be applied aswell to all other games using punkbuster and its new pbservices.

1. Browse to your bf2 installation
- C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\ - depends on your localisation & installation, path may vary!

2. Delete broken Punkbuster - Open folder pb and delete all files and folders in it, but not the folder pb (!) itself - pbsetup.exe in step 3. will reload all required punkbuster security files and rebuilt the file and folder structure inside the folder pb.

3. Repair broken Punkbuster using pbsetup.exe - Download PunkBuster Online Countermeasures, create a folder C:\Program Files\Punkbuster Update\, copy downloaded pbsetup.exe in it and update your Battlefield 2 Punkbuster running pbsetup.exe from that location.

4. Repair, Check Punkbuster services with pbsvc.exe - Download http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe, copy downloaded pbsvc.exe to C:\Program Files\Punkbuster Update\ and check your punkbuster services running pbsvc.exe from that location - see mine in 4.1. how it should look. Post your log. Please activate your WindowsFirewall before you run pbsvc.exe - you can then read the location both services are started from in pbsvc.log (line 11 & 13).
There is a button to copy the log to clipboard once tests are finished.
pbsvc.exe does not check other security programs and needs no internetconnection - so you get no information from pbsvc.exe if a 3rd party security program blocks those services if you play online - see step 4.4 .

50 Tests finished.

4.2 Uninstall/reinstall Punkbuster Services
- If your log does not look like this - especially that PnkBstrA.exe & PnkBstrB.exe are not located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\, then uninstall&reinstall the punkbusterservices with pbsvc.exe.

4.3 Troubles - If you can't get both services installed to C:\WINDOWS\system32\, you can try that - check again the Punkbusterservices using pbsvc.exe. In line 7 & 39 of my log above you see that PnkBstrB.exe & PnkBstrK.sys is exctracted to C:\Documents and Settings\Arn354\Applicationdata\. Now you have to be quick - while the test is running, copy PnkBstrB.exe & PnkBstrK.sys from C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Applicationdata\ to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and to C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\pb\ .

4.4 Communication - PnkBstrA.exe & PnkBstrB.exe & PnkBstrK.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ must be opened in any 3rd party security program - check your rules and allow in existing or create new rules in your security program. This is one of the most important steps - disable 3rd party security programs (or setup correct) if you get kicked for reason pb client not responding. Check if you still get kicked. Post your Security programs you are using.

4.5 PnkBstrA.exe & PnkBstrB.exe must be marked to start automatic - PnkBstrB.exe will be loaded on joining a server - you find PnkBstrB.exe just among services if you try to join a game. PnkBstrB.exe will load PnkBstrK.sys on the fly. The time at the moment is too short or PnkBstrB.exe should always run - this is the reason for the 2 connect attempts you always have. Once all is started correct you can connect - mostly on second attempt.

5. Enable PB-Client logging - Create a file called pbcl.cfg in C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\pb\

5.1 pbcl.cfg

Quote:

pb_msgprefix "PunkBuster Client"
pb_sleep 60
pb_logtofile 1
pb_sslog 1
pb_sssave 1

This will create a pbcl.log in C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\pb\ once you join a game. See mine in 5.2 how it should look. Post your log.
