The jack is used for the headset and USB is used for the mic and an amplifier.
 Awards

The USB plug powers the headset, my speakers have headphone and microphone jacks, the speaker amp controls the volume also. I've had sets with only stereo plugs, I really can't tell much difference in sound quality. Both are very accurate, as far as pinpointing sounds on the playing field. The USB headset has a much longer cord, then analog sets I've owned, which is very convenient as it allows you to sit a comfortable distance from your monitor without stressing the cords, which has been the main killer of the jack headsets I've owned.
