Probably because of my computer illiteracy. In layman's terms can someone explain if fwupdate.exe is good or bad? Should I allow the update or not? If bad how do I kill it?

LGODDFU U fwupdate.exe Auto firmware update program for LG Electronics CD-ROM/DVD writer No you can find all startup info and just about anything else related to that @ sysinfo.org if you want to stop said pain in the butt click start and in win 7 use the search field and type in msconifg it will be under the startup tab.
