  9. It's all I can stand, and I canst stands no more. I hereby expunge, invalidate, vacate, quash, repudiate and put the kobosh on the winter of 2013-2014. Henceforth, until the first frost of fall, the temperature in these parts at least may approach, but shall not fall, below 32 degrees. Nor shall there shall be any further accumulation of snow - not a single flake shall insult us. Robins and other birds hiding out in old barns and other points south are to immediately take wing and complete their spring journeys. We instruct stinging insects to come forth and dogwoods and wysteria to bloom, woodpeckers to drum and owls to hoot, sap to run and leaves to bud, pollen to rain and nightcrawlers to migrate across roads and driveways. Let tom turkeys strut, trout look up for flies, butterflies sally forth, grass to grow, and nests and hives be built. Big block stores may put flowers on display and shorts and T-shirts are approved attire. The air shall produce that spring smell - equal parts rain and soil, grass and ozone - and kids may take to bicycles and skateboards, ladies to spring cleaning and men to servicing mowers and trimmers. Let all this - and more - be done, the public welfare requiring it. I have spoken.

  15. More like "interests" than "hobbies" with me because I pursue none of them full-time and all of them as time permits. My interests are in the sciences, in particular paleontology and archeology, as well as history. I satisfy those mainly by reading but it also leads to collections: old photographs of my home town which I have up at a web site I built many years ago (www.ogdensburg.info) and antiques - I like old things. I am an avid collector of fossils and have an impressive collection. I also enjoy working with my hands; I've rebuilt three houses including all plumbing, electrical and carpentry, and cabinetmaking. I'm also the family historian and genealogist and over three decades have listed more than 12,000 family relatives and have one of the more complete genealogies to be found, with only a handful of relatives missing through the first nine generations (512 sixth-great grandparents) which may be seen at my genealogy site (www.ogdensburg.info/genealogy) and other than that, first-person gaming.
  16. How about parents suing their children who end up in jail or on drugs, to recoup the failed investment they made in them over 18-plus years?
  17. Hope it's the best birthday you've had!!!!!
  18. Thank you one and all. It's been the best week of my life with even more good news yesterday: whatever caused my kidney damage is no longer active. It likely was prescription drugs acting in concert but there's no medical trail to follow and unless there's further deterioration, they'll never know. While I'll remain staged with chronic kidney disease, it likely won't progress and I can - and will - do quite well with diet and exercise. And so, there will be no kidney biopsy; as with the inactive myeloma, I'll be tested regularly but no treatment is necessary. I could not get a better result for either illness. I am truly blessed.
  19. While in Vietnam I heard a crack as I was getting up one morning and looked up to see a small round hole in the tile. Where my head had been seconds earlier was an M16 round. Feel like I dodged a bullet there - and that I just dodged another one. Bone marrow biopsy among numerous other tests shows a precursor stage of myeloma called MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) which means there is a clone of plasma cells in the bone marrow. But they are not malignant. Only a small portion of patients with MGUS go on to develop active myeloma and even then, it can take years. So now the focus is on what hammered my kidneys last summer and fall. Nephrologist believes I've lost seventy to eighty percent of function: either some drug or combination of drugs that I was on, or possibly an infection from a parasite (Toxoplasmosis) that manifested in my left eye last December and was quickly treated. Next up is a kidney biopsy but even if it comes to a transplant, I have five siblings who are waiting to test if needed. Feel MOST fortunate!!! Sometimes, the good guys win (at least, I've always felt like I was one of the good guys.) And without question, all the support I got from family and friends carried me through and will continue to. Now, I'm going to go out and get drunk - since I don't drink, it won't take much.
  20. Hang in there and get better. Your health is most important.
  21. Congrats and/or my deepest sympathies. Be sure to sign up for the XI Admin 401K plan. Last year, it only lost 86 percent.
  22. Welcome Loco!!
