  4. October 9th Leif Erikson Day in United States Quick FactsLeif Erikson Day honors the first Scandinavian known to have set foot on American soil and the contribution of the Nordic peoples to the United States. Local names Name Language Leif Erikson Day English Día de Leif Erikson Spanish Leif Erikson Day 2013Wednesday, October 9, 2013 Leif Erikson Day 2014Thursday, October 9, 2014 List of dates for other years Leif Erikson Day honors a viking explorer known as Leif Erikson. He is believed to be the first recorded Nordic person to have visited the area that is now the United States. It is believed that he visited Baffin Island and Labrador around 1000 CE. Many US presidents have, in the past, publicly praised the spirit of exploration and discovery, as well the contributions of people with a Nordic background and their culture. Public lifeLeif Erikson Day is and observance and not a federal public holiday in the United States. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. BackgroundLeif Erikson was born of Norwegian descent around 970 CE in Iceland. It is thought that his father and grandfather were outlaws and explorers around Scandinavia and Greenland. His father founded two settlements in Greenland. Leif had two brothers and one sister. He married a woman named Thorgunna and they had one son, called Thorkell Leifsson. Leif Erikson went to Norway to work for King Olaf I of Norway. During his stay, he converted to Christianity. When he returned to Island, he bought a boat and, in 1003, set out to explore the land west of Greenland that had been discovered by Bjarni Herjolfsson, and older explorer. The land that he had discovered was actually Newfoundland, which is now part of Canada. The 'Saga of the Greenlanders' tells of his adventures. It is thought that he visited Baffin Island and Labrador and settled on the Northern part of the island of Newfoundland, now all part of Canada. There are speculations that Leif Erikson or later explorers may have traveled into the area that is now Minnesota in the United States. Some controversial archaeological finds, such as the Kensington Runestone and the Maine Penny, support this theory, but it is not considered proven. October 9 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the day that the ship Restauration arrived in New York from Stavanger, Norway on October 9, 1825. This was the start of organized immigration from Scandinavia to the USA. The date is not associated with an event in Leif Erikson's life.
  5. There's got to be other stuff in cigarettes besides just nicotine. I heard once that Marlboro put chocolate derivatives in theirs to make them more addictive but I'm not sure if that's true. All I know is that I used to be crazy addicted to cigarettes and I would avoid situations where I had to go more than a few hours without one. I love my e-cig but I don't have those insane cravings with it like I had with analogs. I'm probably still addicted to nicotine but I can easily go without the e-cig and it doesn't bother me.

  7. One of my all time favorites.
  8. So much crap going on in the world. Sometimes we just need something to make us smile.
  9. Oh that is horrible. God bless you in and your family during your time of loss. I will be praying for your family and I hope that you can somehow find peace.
  10. Some people have mentioned "Mini Fests". Schedule them in various places. I'd be happy to help coordinate "Southern XI Fest". However, there still should be one main XI Fest even if mini fests were held.
  11. I like the idea of middle of the country and of course I prefer the south. Not thrilled at all about Vegas as I don't want to have to fly. I still like the idea of Pigeon Forge, TN because there is SOOOO much to do there and it would be neat to rent a row of cabins.
  12. Blah blah blah My comment serves only to get the spoilers off the home page for Bama's sake. He's still watching the series and doesn't want it spoiled for him. He's been avoiding social media and entertainment news.
  13. We had a blast in Srv 2. We were nice and polite. Hxtr and I were on the same team a good bit but we let our team members run and kill the enemy while we knifed each other. We did come for the occasional thaw though. We thought it was hilarious. Good times.
  14. Continuing to pray for Blake and your family. Please keep us updated.
  15. Ha ha ha ha ha!!! What a night!!! Hxtr!! It was you saying "come on BB! Just one more". But yes. Bama does let me do anything I want. lol
  16. There's no set time. Everyone comes when they can. Usually we start around or 9pm EST but some may show up earlier and some later. Keep watch on TS.
  17. I think I may have more than 2 TB worth of files. lol However, I am certain that I can get rid of a lot of junk and duplicate files. I have a 2 TB in my desktop computer. I might temporarily move everything to that drive (if it all fits). One of my external HD has 1.3 TB of data, another has 190 GB, desktop has 230 GB and I'm not sure about the laptop. It's ridiculous to have this much data. I used to not keep any data much on my computer. I saved everything to the external. I liked it that way. I would really like to have something like this: http://promotions.newegg.com/seagate/13-4368/index.html?icid=209925
  18. I admit it. I'm a hoarder. I have a laptop and a desktop computer as well as 2 external hard drives. Most of these are full. Some of the files are duplicates and some are not. I would like to get everything from the computers and hard drives all in one place, preferably on an external HD. I don't want to buy another external hard drive if I can help it. What's the easiest way to do this? Currently I am copying files from an external HD to my desktop because the desktop still has HD space which is taking a long time. I worry that I won't have enough space on the computer to get it all copied. Once I get all of the files in one place, I will then go through an get rid of duplicates. Somehow, I manage to save the same family photos over and over in different places. If I could ever get things in one spot, I could see what I have duplicates of. Is there an easier way?
