Today is Jack T Murphy Day. JTM was the Patriarch of my family, born and died on April 15th and thus, got the last word in on the IRS! lol This was one of the many epic and legendary things he accomplished in his lifetime, aside from being the penniless orphan of Irish immigrants in the middle of the great depression, surviving some of the worst battles the Marines saw in WWII, he saved men's lives in battle and was decorated with the Purple Heart among other medals. He came home from the war and married my Grandmother and was drafted by the Rams football franchise but he turned the offer down in order to raise his new family. Later, he would also turn down a shoe-in offer at a career in Detroit city politics. He wanted nothing to do with politics. He was tough as nails but kind, generous and lovable. Like me, he grew up a farmboy from northern MI, he always had a backyard garden at his home at 12802 Lenore St. in Redford township. His thundering voice was seldom quiet but he never boasted either. JTM wasn't yer average bear. So, today, we raise a wee spot of whiskey while dropping a tear or two in honor of a great survivor, warrior, father grandfather and great grandfather, the man who's name literally means "Marine", Jack T Murphy. We simple MUST ban ALL assault herring at once! I call to congress to take sweeping and global measures to protect our citizens, young and old from the evils of assault herring. This includes the liberal media's glamorous portrayal of assault herring in television programming such as cooking shows that encourage the use of assault herring in a healthy diet, as well as sport fishing programs and video games that glorify the acquisition (mostly by illegal means) and more horrifically, the use of assault herring.

It's way easier (and cheaper) than people think it is to make a good ale. You can "shoe-string" it on the equipment using an inexpensive kettle and a 5 gallon bucket to ferment or buy an equipment kit for under $100. Using dry or liquid malt extracts as your base malts instead of malted grain (which requires mashing) to further reduce the time and work involved, as well as the required equipment investments you need to mash. You can start saving brown, pry-off bottles ahead of time and you can save your bottle investments too. A case of empty bottles costs nearly as much as a case of beer! You may have a couple or 3 hours of work into a recipe like this if done with extracts. If you take out the honey ($10) and the peach puree ($15), and if you use yeast from a prior batch, you can save another $6 and you'll have a really nice traditional Bavarian beer that costs about $15 to make 50+ 12 oz. bottles ($.30 a beer). It will taste so good you won't believe you made it in yer kitchen. This Traditional Hefewiezen is a perfect example of how sometimes the simplest and more tradition recipes can be the best!

Hallertau hops boil 60 mins 1 vile of White Labs WLP300 Hefeweizen Ale yeast (1L starter the day earlier for best results) Ferment @ 64F to 66F for clove flavor notes, 67F-72F for banana notes. Add peach puree in secondary or, leave it as is for a perfect traditional Weissbier/Hefewiezen Water volume 28.5 qt.s Batch size 5 Gallons Brewhouse efficiency 70% OG 1.048-50 FG 1.007-09 ABV 5.9% IBU 12 This is a fan favorite in the spring and summer. A perfect easy drinking lawnmower beer!
