Here in PA a State of PA boater safety certificate is required, I do not at this point know what it entails.

Fiberglass will be my choice, also I/O.

Mercury.....got some negative comments.

Bayliner seems to be getting the short end of the stick in comments here. Not sure why. Any specific issues with Bayliner's?

If not Bayliner which should I favor? Unfortunate part is that my closest Marine dealer is a Bayliner dealer.

I need to do some research on Marinas. I do not want to buy from a salt water marina.

Thanks for the input.

Anyone who says you should get an Inboard is insane, It is a car engine, with a drive sticking out, If you enjoy maintaining your car, then an inboard is for you... If you just wanna turn the key and go, year after year, get a 4 stroke outboard on any boat design you like. Personally i like a walk through windshield... good for all weather, get a 19 to 21 foot Aluminum or Fiberglass, Used... Prefferably not used alot...  Do not by a bayliner... Junk...    I have a 17 ft Alumacraft with a walk through windshield, 90 hp merc outboard, And fish lakes Like Lake of the Woods, Lake Michigan, and Small lakes all over Minnesota.  About 2 hours of Maint a year

+1.........I had a 125 Yamaha on a 21 ft deck boat that would pull skiers and tubers with no trouble at all. Also an inboard takes up a lot of space on the inside of the boat and limits you.

Looks like a nice boat and good buy, Shamu. Was checking our nearby Four Wiins marina near me and comparable year and length Four Winns were more $$ here. And having 3.5 years more warranty is good extra. By then, you will know if you got a lemon. If it treats you good for that long it should be good for years to come if you take care of it (don't hit the bottom with the prop!!) Good luck and enjoy!!

OK shamu, my wife & I bought an old 74 fiberglass AMF Crestliner 17 1/2 foot deep vee open bow 10 years ago. 115 Johnson, 2 cycle 84 outboard. Beautiful boat, creme hull w/orange interior, anybody knows it on the Illinois river. It has cost us nothing other than license & fuel, and has been an absolute blast for the last decade. We feel we are the exception rather than the rule. Boats suck money, eat fuel, and are a genuine pain in the ass. Ours has been a blessing, had great fun, and continue to enjoy, without delving deep into our pocket. Can't say you will have the same luck, just know what you're getting. Shop around dude.

Deerejohn, yes, I am in the Poconos and for many years my parents had a lake front home on Lake Wallepaupack. So thanks for the link.

From the rest of the posts I am thinking more inboard motor, the comments make sense. When I was a kid outboards were the thing, Evinrude, Johnson and Merc.

Tomorrow on my way home I plan to stop at two boat dealers, one at Lake Wallenpaupack and the other near Quakertown, PA. Just trying to get my feet wet and gain a little experience on what my needs and costs will be. I doubt I will buy for this years season but suspect late fall would actually be a good tome to negotiate.

Obviously I need to go through an educational process on a decision like this.

I might even surf E-bay. because of my business travels I have a larger market area to work than many buyers.

Thanks for the comments, all are appreciated and considered.

One more thing, should I trailer the boat instead of a slip rental isn't it difficult to launch a boat by yourself? I was spoiled as a kid, we had a private dock and no need of a trailer.

If you want to get your feet wet buy a boat with a hole in the bottom. It will be very cheap, and it don't matter what engine is on it. LOL

Been awhile since I posted and my sentiments are changing but becoming more focused.

I am now looking to spend more and buy new just because I want to. Nice to have something not finger f***** by a previous owner.

I am also probably going I/O since my boat will be strictly fresh water. In salt water there are advantages to OB.

This is my leading candidate and target acquisition will be for April 2012.

http://www.regalboats.com/1900

Stock engine is 190 HP but I will order a 220 HP Volvo. The other option of significant cost will be a wake board tower.

A close second is:

I have certainly learned MSRP carries little weight in this market.

The Hurricane is very similar to what I had but mine was an outboard and I loved it.

More detail I did not mention.

The Hurricane comes from a boat dealer near but not on the lake, basically just sells boat. Getting  a slip for the boat is about a two year wait list. I would need a trailer for moving the boat around until I got a slip.

The Regal comes from a marina on the lake in a favorable location for me. If I buy from them I am guaranteed a slip for next season and however long I wish to rent it. Also if I just keep it on the lake I will not need a trailer, they will put it in and out for a small fee and also winter store the boat. Trailers are available for rent if you do wish to take the boat elsewhere for a vacation or something. They will load the boat on the trailer for you and put it back in when you return.

So the Regal more convenient, no trailer cost.

The Hurricane, needs a trailer, no slip fee ($1200.00 season), launch boat yourself each time for use.

To me convenience is worth a lot. I do not think trailering would be a fun thing if I am by myself.

Edge to Regal.
