I have a 1997 Ford Mercury Cougar, it has had problems for the past year I'd say. One issue is taking corners, not all times but sometimes the rear left side of the car will have a thumping sound in around 1 second intervals for the time taking the turn. Then the other problem is the engine, it's had it's engine light on for almost a year. I've taken it to get fixed 2 times, since then it stays fine for about 5 days then it returns. The average gas mileage is supposed to be 27 MPG but lately it seems less than 20, it has trouble picking up speed on the highway for quite a while. It will take sometimes between 1-3 minutes to get past 65 but after that it's smooth sailing. The shop says it's something to do with the fuel line, they fix it then it comes back within a few days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

There are so many electronics on those cars, it could take a while to pinpoint anything. as for the thumping in the rear, maybe check the wheel bearings, they maybe sloppy.

O2 sensors could cause the fuel trouble, idle air control vavle. a number of things,

I personally had issues for months on a 95 Ford Ranger, I replaced speed sensors, O2 sensors, antilock brake sensor, fuel filter, plugs and wires, all trying to solve code problems on the check engine light, turns out, one day the alternator started knocking, so naturally I replaced it, and BAM, all problems were gone. Everything was getting low voltage cause the alternator wasn't keeping up with the demands.

good luck, maybe someone else will come along and have some more insight on the fuel troubles, there are a few auto techs here.

Try using this stuff.....1 bottle treats 25 gallons and should be used every 3rd fill up and never mixed with high octane fuel....

Oxygen sensor, and /or ignition control module. Both while KILL your gas mileage and your speed pickup. If the check engine light is on take it to auto zone and they will diagnose the problem for free.
