I imagine your winters are quite a bit more mild in NC. Any days that get near 60 degrees they should be free to come out. If they accidently get shut in on a warm day they can over heat quickly. Just make sure they have enough honey to feed themselves for the winter and leave them alone. They have a way of knowing what's best for themselves. Natural hives don't have screen doors and they do just fine. Blackbart, BeerGoat and loaderXI
 Awards

Do you think i should block the bottom board screen or leave it. If i do block it, they still have the front intrance and the top vent!! It can get down in the teens with high humidity!! at times
 Awards

Just the main entrance and exit at the base of the hive and it stayed open year round.
 Awards

I used to harvest honey from natural hives in trees and transfer the bees to a super in my yard. I figured if they could do that well in a little hole in a tree they would love a big wooden box with room to expand. You might want to Google beekeepers in your local area to see what works best for your climate.
 Awards
