I used to raise them. Do you have a question about them?

Well, its my first year and first winter, just looking into shutting the screen bottom board for the winter or not, and just to see who all has them. Around Charlotte NC, the hobby seems to be taking off!!

I raised them in southern Ohio where it was colder than the shady side of a witches titty and I never closed up my hives. I imagine your winters are quite a bit more mild in NC. Any days that get near 60 degrees they should be free to come out. If they accidently get shut in on a warm day they can over heat quickly. Just make sure they have enough honey to feed themselves for the winter and leave them alone. They have a way of knowing what's best for themselves. Natural hives don't have screen doors and they do just fine.

What i meant to say i guess, my bottom board is screen, i still have the top vented and the front door is still wide open. Do you think i should block the bottom board screen or leave it. If i do block it, they still have the front intrance and the top vent!! It can get down in the teens with high humidity!! at times

When you say "the bottom board" do you mean the bottom of the brooder or hive? I guess I'm from the old school. No screens or vents. Just the main entrance and exit at the base of the hive and it stayed open year round.

Yes, theres two kinds of bottom boards, the bottom brood box sits on the bottom board. 1 is screened and the other is solid, each bee keeper has his own idea about each one lol. some say its a sin to have a screened bottom board and others think its the best thing since sliced bread, but theres tons of ideas on what should happen in the winter .

I guess I always did it the way nature intended it. I used to harvest honey from natural hives in trees and transfer the bees to a super in my yard. I figured if they could do that well in a little hole in a tree they would love a big wooden box with room to expand.

You might want to Google beekeepers in your local area to see what works best for your climate.
