Not sure many state-siders will know who he was but he was an iconic figure in country music. America would have been proud to have him as our own.

Yes indeed. He was a fiercely proud  Canadian. One commentator called him our combination Woodie Guthrie and Hank Snow. How'd you hear of him Shamu?

Part of Canadian culture. Never loved country music, but sure loved Tom's place in our country's culture. Very sad indeed.

I like Country Folk and even Bluegrass and thoroughly enjoyed the Hockey Song to which I linked. On rare occasions his songs were played on Willie Nelsons station on SiriusXM.

The guy was an original. I was never a fan of his music but the songs were catchy and he was a true Canadian... Great post Shamu..  Kudo's buddy.

I should add that I like the comparison to Woodie Guthrie.

And while it is sort of a stretch his music and mannerism also reminds me of Will Rogers who used his rope as his stage instrument as he told jokes and offer all kinds of bits of wisdom. Will Rogers was our American Folk Hero.
