The main difference between Ubuntu Desktop and Server is theGUI (Gnome, KDE, XFCE and so on)

You can install the server, and add the display manager of your choice to have a GUI.
You can also install the Desktop version and install server components like Apache, PHP etc. What ever you want.

You can use OwnCloud for your cloud stuff. (http://owncloud.org/) Easy setup and handling.

Give me a yell if you need help :)

Hi Fireurza. In my home (just the two of us) we have an iMac, a Hackintosh, a Windows 7 rig, and a few other odds and sods. I have a couple of servers in the basement (HP ML350's, G5 series), and one of them, my file server, is running Ubuntu desktop. First, there is no difference between the Desktop and server versions other than the graphical interface. The Kernels are identical. A GUI makes it easier to manage. I have 2 RAID volumes plus a direct attached storage box with 4 drives in it. I simply launch the File Manager, and select the volumes/drives that I want to share. The first time a message will pop up telling you that you need to install Samba, with instructions. Once quickly done, select your shares, check the box to have the drive's share remembered on reboot, and away you go. All shares are visible and accessible on all of my systems with no hassle. I also installed Ultimate Media Server (a fork of PS3 Media Server) and my music and audio files can be played on-screen on the big TV via my PS3 (and likely via my hacked Apple TV running XBMC).

Let me know if you have any questions.

I'm interested in learning how to do this. I so want to learn Linux better and make use of it. Sounds like a perfect project.

Does it have to be Ubuntu flavor of Linux?

@hxtr

No. Owncloud is a web application, you can use your favorite operating System. Windows XP/Vista/7/8  with Apache, Windows Server with Apache or IIS, or every Linux distribution.

http://owncloud.org/install/

If you want it more secure, you may try TeamDrive, it is encrypted by default but there are limitations within the free version.

Nope. That's very easy. :D

You need a higher level?  Here you go:
Integrate a 2FA (two-factor authentication) on your Linux system. Thats what it could look like:

RoR is a nice web application framework. Though I am not that RoR power user.

What's your idea to develop?

well the reason i run 3 machines.... mac mini is actually very low on consumption.... but i run the ubuntu because i want a cloud system to replace skydrive and all the other cloud systems.... its free to me other than the electric cost which is quite low

tech

im gonna see if i can create my own cloud system instead of using the owncloud system using RoR.... might come out looking a little like old school twitter but eh.... if i can do that then im putting the 4 2u racks i have sitting in my garage to use and making my own cloud business

@LaRSin

i used an old computer i had laying around as a server... i have time warner home... used no-ip to set up a domain and used their program to update the ip address of my domain each time my ip address changes cuz i dont have a static ip. i use ubuntu desktop and did sudo apt-get to get all the server packages. i currently am designing in html but plan to change it to Ruby on rails later.
