On a boring flight home the other day, I sketched this on my tablet... I want my next pipe project to be a real carving.

I'm thinking I'll do something like this..  What do you think?   Any other good ideas for carvings?

Thats badass......Harley tank with emblems on side cap on top

A gas tank?

Interesting idea but super boring shape... it's basically a teardrop.  The bowl coming out through the gas cap is a nice bit though; I like that part.

My pipe idea appears to be making an ass of itself.

Most anything with a Harley-Davidson theme would be popular but you gotta be careful of copyright stuff and all.

But if you just make it biker style  . . you know black and chrome . . lol

Something that would look badass while a guy is cruzin along on his Harley .. fast looking .. maybe with a skull.

Ok I'm being serious now, I think.

Are you that good at carving to attempt what you sketched on your tablet? Do you have proper carving tools? What kind of wood will you use, because I don't believe the briarwood you used on your first pipe would be soft enough for you to carve a figural type pipe, at least not easily. It seems like cherry or even olive would look beautiful and be much easier to work with.

My dad did some wood carving when I was a kid and made some beautiful pieces including a number of very detailed decoys with the grain of the feathers carved onto the surface, but he had a lot of carving tools and they weren't cheap. My dad is the type of guy who gets a wild hair up his ass to try something different, then reads a few books and does it. This mentality has served him well over his life. He is a master computer programmer and taught himself starting in the late 1960's and that lead to his own insurance software development business and my career as well although I never had the desire to be a programmer like him.

Hey! That's how I am lol. Only, I have the internet so I don't need to read books. lol.  I tend to move from hobby to hobby when I feel I have mastered one well enough.

Originally I was thinking briar, but you are right... it's very hard so I would need to use a dremmel for most of the carving. (I'm very skilled with a dremmel)

I guess another option would be to use cherry but then I'm not fond of the way it smokes.  Perhaps a meerschaum insert for a cherry stummel?  I think I like that idea.
