This may not be in the right forum but here goes.

I've watched a lot of vids on saving old media like pictures and videos. I've used some services that have converted said media to digital and then backed it up both in the cloud and to things like SSDs, DVDs, etc. Seems like every time I check the way I've done it is not a good way . . . har?

Any way, I have a bunch of old photos, negatives, etc., and I'm wondering what you Idiots have used that works well.

Thanks.

My main storage at home is my nas. I keep another backup on a few spare external ssd drives as well. I also use google to back up most of my photos, videos and some other files. Game configs etc. If you have Amazon prime they give you unlimited photo backup but not video. The interface on their app and mobile app really sucks though for organization. You can always shop around for different cloud providers etc. Read reviews, compare pricing etc. My preferred nas is synology due to some of the apps they offer.       https://www.synology.com/en-us

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, I remember researching NAS systems years ago. I got lost in all the RAID configs at the time. After looking at the Synology DS223 I think it is fairly simplified and cost effective. I've got tons of HDs sitting around doing nothing and they just pop in slicker than goose poop.

I have done my own photo scanning, family vcr tape conversions etc. If you have a large amount of media and don't feel like screwing with the technical headache\footwork google around. There are many companies out there that do this. There are probably some local companies around you as well. My dad had quite a few old slides and movies done.

I’ve had old family slides, as well as some 8 mm stuff done in the past. I’m going to buy an Epson picture scanner. I’ve had old family slides, as well as some 8 mm stuff done in the past. I’m going to buy a Epson picture scanner. With the amount of photos, I have it will be way cheaper to do it myself. The hot tip on the NAS system  will be project number one before I start scanning everything.

I've had good luck using my Epson V600 picture scanner, which scans slides / negatives / photos and documents.  I pretty much use it to cover all my scanning needs.  I also have some Super 8mm video (with sound), but didn't find a digitizer that handled sound with the video(non commercial).  I did purchase one of those 'step' frame-by-frame' 8mm/super8mm machines (expensive, but worked ok).  I still have my super8 mm projector (with sound) but it's on it's last leg.  Tried digitizing video directly from that (little box with mirror in it) and a camera, but the video was terrible with flashes of light from the projector frames.  So the frame-by-frame step machine, I was able to get decent video, and used the projector to grab/record the sound - then used (free version) Davinci Resolve to put the two back together (join sound/video)... only problem was the different speeds, I got 'some' sound drift (sync to video).. but got it close enough through adjustments where you probably wouldn't know it unless you knew it was off.  That was the best I came up with for my 'do-it-yourself' 🙂

As it turns out, that is the one that I am going to order. I need to get my NAS set up so I have somewhere to store all the stuff first.

That is super good information and I’m glad that I don’t have to do any Super 8!
