I had the same problem quite some time ago. What I did (remember) is after you change the name in multi player options from unknown to your new name click Esc then click multiplayer options. Then click Esc again and multiplayer options again and that should do it. Seems a little weird but that worked for me.

I tried to restart the server as well and it would go right back to the first map. I changed maps and had the same problem. -
