Multiplayer Reveal Impressions and Interviews The Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer reveal event was invite-only for press which means hands-ons impressions and interviews! In this article you will find a compilation of different multiplayer previews in text and video form. Kotaku » believe that Black Ops will "become the de facto multiplayer shooter of the fall", describing that the game features some exciting online features and gambling is the most notable addition. Along with the new Wager Match modes, the familiar Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy and Team Deathmatch modes were also playable. They also mention that the return of dogs will be a good way to target those camping while the mortar strike allows you select three areas for the mortar strike to rain havoc on. Another killstreak mentioned is the return of the Care Package which now sees you bag rare weapons such as a mini-gun and a rocket launcher. Wager Match is meant to be a adrenaline pumping gambling mode and Kotaku feel that the Gun Game mode type was the most nail-biting. This mode sees you having to progress through different weapons until you reach the 20th tier, the person who does so first wins. You start off with a pistol and it gradually changes to shotguns, machine games, assault rifles and grenade launchers until you end up with the explosive crossbow and ballistic knife. Due to the slow reload times, limited ammo and needing a very good aim, these two weapons lead to a frantic and tense conclusion. Despite "adoring" and finding Gun Game the most nail-biting Wager Match type, none of them disappointed Kotaku. Out of the handful of maps that they played, they found "Radiation" to be their favorite. There are nooks and crannies to explore (or camp as they mention...) and dark passageways to sneak and hide. The map also features a large open area in the center which is flanked by platforms that offer high ground and a great view of the map. There's also an underground pathway that can be accessed by doors and players can choose to open or close the doors via a switch on a raised platform. "Launch" is a tight, close quarters map that is set on a missile platform. At certain intervals the massive missile will blast off and violently rocks the battlefield, players can initiate these launch themselves and they can use it to their tactical advantage considering those underneath the rocket will be fried alive. Kotaku were left very impressed with what they played and believe that Black Ops' multiplayer is definitely very promising. In a separate hands-on with VG247 », they believed that much more is on offer rather than rehashed Modern Warfare material. They also noticed that recoil seems to be noticeably increased. They mentioned that they noticed a big increase in detail to the in-game player card and that the game tracks a lot of details such as weapon usage, accuracy, what's killing you and what you're killing with. They said that there's pages of this stuff and that they even noticed two different "heat map" options, one shows the model of your body and where you're being hit while the other shows the kill zones on a given map. CVG » expected to be underwhelmed by the multiplayer mode but they were proven wrong. They mention that Treyarch has "clearly poured its heart and soul into" multiplayer. Noting that they have introduced a dozen of new features, some which are huge and help make online FPS "feel a little bit fresher than it was before". Of course, one of the main questions at the moment is as to whether there will be a beta released. CVG » asked Treyarch this question during the event and Community Manager Josh Olin said that Activision isn't planning a public beta and that current console trials are "internal only" at the moment. Thousands of people are participating in their internal beta and includes all sorts of Activision studios. He then went on to talk about how the internal beta is the only one they are planning right now and that there were a lot of misconceptions and confusion regarding Google ads and other rumors. He mentions that "keeping it internal is very helpful for us" and that it allows them to "move a lot faster on our builds" which means they can update it quickly for those within the company that have a dev kit rather than pushing out a title update. So for those hoping to play the beta, maybe now is the time to lower your expectations regarding one. The other popular question is will Zombies be in the game. The event was multiplayer only and Treyarch aren't prepared to reveal their co-op mode until later this year. But GamePro » did find something interesting. They were digging into the game's achievements and found two that related to waves of Zombies. I'm not too sure if the achievements will have even been programmed into the game yet or if Treyarch would let something this big slip under their noses. Therefore, only take this as a rumor rather than any confirmation. Modern Warfare 2 had 16 maps on launch day while World at War had 13. GamesRadar » have now mentioned that they were shown 4 maps out of a possible 14 that will be available on launch day this November. Many will agree that hacking, modding and glitching has plagued the online areas of the franchise in recent years. When speaking to NowGamer », online director Dan Bunting said that the exploitation of glitches in order to boost XP has "diminished the reputation of the franchise in a lot of people's eyes". He believes that anti-cheating measures in Black Ops will be the most stringent the CoD series has ever seen. He insisted that "cheating won't pay" and it will "just bring down the ban hammer". It appears that Treyarch are very dedicated to security of online play in order to create a fair and equal game for all. Due to all this, he stats that they have "a lot of anti-cheating, anti-boosting stuff going on behind the scenes, so we are monitoring that". They're going to have a "very heavy hand in the online security" of their own game and that they're taking it "very seriously" which includes having an engineer dedicated to it. He also claims that cheaters won't be able to hack their hardware to get around this and that if people do hack the hardware then they have the ability to detect it and report the culprit to Sony or Microsoft. Very strong words Mr. Bunting. Lets hope that Treyarch stick to their word and that Black Ops will be a fair and fun game. Multiplayer Reveal Information Round-up Yesterday was the Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer reveal and it delivered a whole lot of goodness. The event kicked off with a presentation in a IMAX theater. Producer Dan Bunting and lead designer David "Vahn" Vonderhaar shown off the new additions and "Compete, Customize and Create" was described as being the 3 pillars. They announced that there would be an offline multiplayer mode called "Combat Training" which lets you play against bots (AI opponents), the main aim of this mode is to allow you to practice your skills. The mode has its own rank up and can be played solo or co-op with a friend. Mark Lamia, CEO of Treyarch, said that Combat Training will be a "complete standalone experience" and that it will have its own progression system. Another new feature is "CoD Points". CoD points are basically the in-game cash that you can use to unlock weapons, uniforms, accessories and more. Along with your in-game successes, CoD points can also be earned by completing "Contracts". These contracts are in-game challenges that reward players with CoD points when they have completed certain tasks. Along with the CoD points and contracts comes "Wager Match" which are free-form game modes that have been designed to be "adrenaline junkie fun", as described by Vahn. The Wager Matches are separate from the standard rank playlists and you can take the currency you've earned and you can gamble it against other players. They say that you're gambling that you are going to come in the top three on the scoreboard. The four modes in Wager Matches are; One in the Chamber where everyone spawns with a pistol and you only have one bullet and three lives but if you kill someone then you take their bullet while if you miss then you only have your knife left. In Sticks and Stones you spawn with a crossbow, ballistic knife and a tomahawk, if you hit the enemy with the tomahawk then they instantly become bankrupt. In Gun Game you are given a series of progressive weapons and with every kill you get a better weapon, the first to go through all the weapons win and if you get knife then you get sent back one tier. In Sharp Shooter everyone starts with the same randomly selected weapon, you get to use the weapon for a certain amount of time and then everyone gets the next weapon, each kill gives you a perk which eventually leads to a scoring multiplier. The trailer for Wager Matches can be seen here ». Perks Perks are a pretty important part of the franchise and they were all revealed yesterday. There are 3 perk tiers and the first one effects the appearance of your character. For example, if you choose Ghost then your character will wear a ghillies suit. The appearance of your character can be seen in the menus when choosing different weapons, perks etc. It's also confirmed that pro versions of the perks will be returning from Modern Warfare 2. Tier 1 Lightweight Scavenger - Replenish your ammo from fallen enemies. Ghost - Undetectable by Spy Plane, and Blackbird. Flak Jacket - Higher explosives resistance. Hardline Tier 2 Hardened - Deeper bullet penetration Scout - Longer Hold Breath during Scoped Views Steady Aim Sleight of Hand Warlord - Bling perk from MW2 Tier 3 Marathon Ninja Second Chance- Will allow you to be revived and in turn revive others Hacker- "Similar" to SitRep/ Pro Version allows you to "booby trap" enemy CarePackages, and hack enemy electronical devices and turn them into your team's( Claymore, Sentry Guns, SAM Turrets) Tactical Mask- Tear Gas and Flashbang resistant SMGs MP5KSkorpionMAC11AK74uUziPM63MPLSpectreAssault Enfield M14 Famas Galil AUG FN FAL AK47 Commando Shotguns Olympia Stakeout SPAS LMGs HK21 RPKM60Sniper Rifles Dragunov WA2000 L96A1 The above weapons are just some of the weapons that have been seen at the event. Attachments Extended Mag ACOG sight Red Dot sight Reflex Infrared scope Dual Mag Masterkey Flamethrower Grenade Launch Suppressor It's also believed that the flamethrower is an attachment that can be bought for 750 CoD Points. Treyarch are focusing on a lot more customization for Black Ops. Amongst this customization is the ability to choose what reticle you want when using a sight. Most (if not all) of these reticles can be read below: Reticles Dot Semicircle Line with dot Circle Smiley Arrows Horizontal Arrows Vertical Arrows with dot Boxes Burst Circle within a circle Circle with dot Circle with Crosshairs Circle with inner line Circle with outer line Circle with arrows Circle with triangles Outer crosshairs Small crosshairs Large crosshairs Diamond Diamond outline Heart Radiation Skull Square Square outline Star 3 dots Treyarch Triangle Outer triangles x X with dot yin yang The colors that you can choose are green, blue, purple, teal, yellow and orange. Thanks to MorganJEast » for the weapons, attachments and reticules lists above! Killcams and the winning killcam returns while deathstreaks, stopping power and juggernaut do not. Four maps were shown at the event and this includes Summit which is a snow mountain base, Launch which is a rocket map, Radiation which is an abandoned power station and Crackled which is a secluded town in shambles. Both Launch and Summit were seen in the teaser trailer and if you stand under the rocket in the Launch map then you will be toasted to death. As proof of yet more customization, you can customize your own emblem that can be placed on your gun and your clan tag can be carved into it to make it your "own". It's also confirmed that host migration will return to the game. You can rank up to level 50 and you will start off with 5 custom classes while you can unlock an additional 5 from prestige 1-5. Killstreaks What would be Call of Duty without the killstreaks? Thankfully, there isn't a game ending killstreak and the maximum is 11 kills. The kills gathered from killstreaks also won't count towards other killstreaks. Below is a list of all the confirmed killstreaks with the amount of kills and CoD Points that are needed. 3 – Spy Plane 3 – RC XD 4 – Counter Spy Plane $1600 4 – Sam Turret $1600 5 – Care Package 5 – Napalm Strike 6 – Sentry Gun $32006 – Mortar Team 7 – Attack Helicopter 7 – Valkyrie Rockets $40008 – BlackBird $45008 – Rolling Thunder $45009 - Chopper Gunner $500011 – Attack Dogs $600011 Gunship $6000Thanks to BigPwner » for the killstreak list! All things that are lethal are on the right bumper while all tactical items go on the left bumper and there's now an equipment category for deploy-ables. Rather than getting special killstreaks in Care Packages, players will get special weapons such as the Death machine which is a chain-gun and the Grim reaper which is a missile launcher. There is also a decoy now, this is a non lethal grenade on your left bumper and it creates false radar blips by shooting. The ballistic knife and crossbow are confirmed to be "special secondary" weapons. The shotgun is confirmed to be a primary weapon while dual pistols are in the game. Equipment Camera Spike C4 TI Jammer Motion sensor Claymore Launchers M72 RPG Strela China Lake Lethal Grenades Tomahawk Frag Semtex When you're in the lobby you have the option to vote for two maps or a random map. It also appears that you can dive through windows, Vosty » tried this from a high level and confirmed that there is a fall damage. It looks as if the bloody screen when getting shot has been removed. Thanks to MorganJEast », DunderMifflin », BigPwner », II_F0XH0UND_II », Senorbarrigas », everyone on our forums » who contributed and everyone else that tweeted, blogged and streamed the event, hence giving us the information we needed! Some Multiplayer Info Arrives Just a few hours until the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer event kicks off but before that some multiplayer info has crawled out from nowhere. We're just a few hours away from the full multiplayer reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops but who said we had to wait that long to get some information? The latest edition of Shortlist magazine » has just gone live and Black Ops multiplayer was featured. It appears that they are the first magazine to go inside Treyarch studios and to preview the multiplayer portion of the game. It's not clear if this is "leaked" information and if they breached their NDA or embargo and some may say that it's "fake", but judging from the new screenshots and the professionalism of the magazine, it looks very real. In the magazine they interview lead multiplayer designer David "Vahn" Vonderhaar. He began by talking about how a lot of inspiration went into the game and that Major Josh Plaster (SOG group member) influenced a lot of additions. The SOG created a lot of their own equipment which includes a "Nightingale" device, this device consists of a bunch of firecrackers bundled together and then thrown into the jungle to create gunfire sounds as it goes off. This is a good decoy to draw out the enemy and to then ambush him, they decided to put this in the game. The "Full Metal Jacket" film is another thing that influenced them as they took the "This is my weapon. This is my gun" line as you can now create a tag and etch it onto your weapons, hence stamping them as your own. This is one of the first things that people noticed in the teaser trailer, along with the smiley sight which Vahn has now confirmed that sights can be altered. You can also clip on attachments such as flame-throwers! Probably one of the most intriguing new features is the introduction of currency. That's right, can you can earn in-game cash for your success! With this cash you can spend it on unlocking weapons, uniforms and accessories to make your character unique. But that's not all, the money has also introduced a new intense addictive game mode called "Wager Mode". This mode features 4 games that you can choose and you gamble with your own currency while the feat of loss is incredibly great that it intensifies the action. "One in the chamber" sees you having one bullet and if you have to shoot and kill then you receive your dead enemy's bullet so that you can reload. If you shoot and miss then your only option is to sneak up on an enemy to knife them. "Sharpshooter" gives you a random generated weapon so you can either be dangerously overpowered or woefully under-prepared. "Sticks and Stones" sees you armed with just three basic weapons, killing an enemy with the crossbow or the ballistic knife gets you big points where the tomahawk doesn't but in a tactical move it resets the dead enemy to zero. "Gun Game" sees you trying to get a kill with 20 different weapons and the first that manages win but if you're knifed to death then you're humiliated and have to go back and perform another kill with the last weapon you used. As expected, the classic team deathmatch returns. They also revealed the names and descriptions of 3 maps which are based around the 60's and 70's Cold War era. "Radiation" is based in an abandoned power station, "Summit" is in a snowbound mountain base and "Launch" is staged around a rocket which lifts off during gameplay, hence frying anyone underneath it. It's worth noting that Summit and Launch were both seen in the teaser trailer. The last feature that is mentioned is the "Theater" mode that got many excited at the end of the teaser trailer. With this feature you can revisit every game you play that is stored and you can view it from different angles. You can also recut the clips to create you own highlights reels and movies, then you can upload it. Vahn acknowledges that there will be a lot of storage needed to be able to cope with the amount of uploads and that they're trying to make the back-end as strong as possible. The last thing worth noticing is that they mention a trailer will debut during half-time of the England vs Bulgaria game on ITV this Friday 3rd September. Thanks to JamesMRios » for the heads up!

[MP REVEAL] Wager Match trailer The event is still underway, and you can expect A LOT of news today. For now, a quick little update with the trailer of a new game type: Wager Match. Wager Match are all new Free-for-All game modes that were designed for you to poop your pants. Period. They're pure adrenaline and will keep you busy and gambling your well deserved CP (COD Points) for a long time to come. CP? Oh yeah! So you choose what your next upgrade will be, depending at how much money you have. In Wager Match, you can bet your money by playing the four different game types, but you need to come in first, second or third or you will loose your money. Play it right or pay the price. It's explained in more detail in the video below.

G4TV GamesCom Preview G4TV were at GamesCom and they managed to get a preview of Call of Duty: Black Ops. They were shown the "Victor Charlie" and "Payback" Single Player levels. The first level that G4TV » seen was "Victor Charlie" which hasn't been shown previously until GamesCom. The level sees the player controlling Sergeant Mason as your helicopter crashes into the Huong River. G4 described the opening to the level as "horrific" due to watching your squadmates being ripped apart by the enemy's bullets as your crashed chopper sinks further into the water. The date for this mission is mentioned as February 5, 1968. The beginning of "Saving Private Ryan" which sees soldiers diving over the edge of the landing boat to avoid fire from a German machine gun is what the level reminds them of. A few seconds after your helicopter plunges into the water, the Viet Cong are already approaching quickly while your character tries to swim underwater (new gameplay element ») to escape the enemy and the bullets that whiz through the water. Once you have completed this level then you are put back in the water to do some stealth swimming which involves swimming behind unsuspecting enemies and killing them by surprise. It's believed that it's a simple swim mechanic but that the re-use of the bullet trails in the water (taken from Call of Duty: World at War) shows how much Treyarch must love the water. A character makes a funny remark, "Rain. That's all it f*ckin' does here is rain" but G4 states that these rain makes a lush, green jungle which is a truly beautiful environment. At one point your character (Mason) grabs an enemy and uses him as a shield while he shoots back at the enemy attackers, but it seems that this is just one of many brutal executions as one encounter also sees the enemy with his throat completely gashed open. A new feature that gets us excited is bullet-time which is when the camera follows your bullet as it heads straight for your enemy, this would make for an awesome kill-cam in Multiplayer, right? If possible, that is! The preview then went on to describe how the level evolves from stealthy to a massive firefight which sees your team gain access to Semtex, but you have to be careful not to hit any civilians within the area. The next part of the level takes place in the infamous tunnel that many previewers have described as dark and creepy. You must crawl through the very tight quarters with only a flashlight to assist your sight. In order to confuse your enemies and to keep them from knowing your position, you have to pop the flashlight on and off. The second and final level that they seen was "Payback" which was first shown to the public at E3 » over 2 months ago. In this level you have broken free after being captured and you then hijack a Russian Hind helicopter after taking out a Viet Cong squad. When in the helicopter, you can pitch and yaw in any direction while your squadmate controls the vertical. The chopper does a lot of damage and destruction with it's weapons, which includes a 12MM nose cannon and two UV-32 rocket pods which both contain 32 S-5 57mm rockets. As far as controls are concerned, you control the pitch with the left stick while the yaw is controlled with the right stick. You can either fire single rocket shots, or you can hold down the trigger to "charge" them up and fire a burst of several rockets at once. The rockets are pretty useful for taking out smaller targets. A LOT of things can blow up when causing your destruction from above, this includes: vehicles, infantry, fuel depots, boats, bridges, a SAM site and more. The previewers played in Demigod mode which makes sure that the can take damage but won't die. Their chopper was on fire, had plenty of bullet holes and well... it was in a very bad shape. The damage modeling in the chopper is dynamic and it will let you know visually how bad the damage is. You can shoot a pipeline that is seen throughout most of the level, shooting it produces a few spouts of fire and G4 mention that it's little details like this that gives Black Ops a visceral experience. They felt that the flying was very satisfying and offered loads of revenge fun as well as describing it as a nice change from being situated on the ground and calling in an airstrike. G4TV didn't experience Multiplayer and only had a short time on the Single Player levels but they found it fun and left them wanting more and luckily that's just around the corner as they ended the preview off by reminding us that a lot more Multiplayer details will be revealed next Wednesday (September 1st). Read the full preview in it's original form here » or check out a short video preview from G4TV below.
