I wish you could have told me about the CPU fan as I most likely have one of those too. Just post what socket it is and I will send one out to you. If you have the disk for the mother board you could try to reinstall the Ethernet driver. If you do not try to Google the mother board on you wife's laptop and download it to a flash drive or just post what you have here and we can find that for you.
