The plan was to save my retail profile, uninstall then give the retail copy to one of the kids. Saved profile, installed free COD4 through Steam and it will not take my imported profile ranked 55. Gives some error about not reading the stats and it resets my rank to 1. Guess I'm hosed and have to start over?

The fix was to reinstall the retail version with the original cd key on my laptop, import profile backup. Bingo! profile worked. Next step was change retail version key to the steam cd key in game. Then copy the profiles from laptop back to my desktop and I'm in business.
