Picked my brother up @ the Bloomington, Illinois rail terminal last Saturday. He rode the Texas Eagle from San Antonio to Illinois for Christmas. Sleeper car, diner, the relaxed mode of travel. His departure was Wednesday, 4:00pm and we had him down there in time for a relaxed chat, & a bite to eat before he boarded. Big board said train was 20 minutes late, but no big deal.

Amtrak pulled up to the platform, we hauled his bags out to board, and was told this train wasn't going any further than St. Louis. HUH? Lady @ the counter informed us the Eagle had been canceled, due to weather, and the next train would be Saturday. EXCUSE me? You knew this when the train left Union Station in Chicago, exactly when were you going to inform passengers down the line?

Joe got a flight from Southwest leaving from Midway the next day, and we took him up to Chicago the next night. Home in two hours. Amtrak left a phone message on his home phone (in San Antonio) that the Eagle was canceled and the call was timed 15 minutes before he would have departed Illinois.

What a crock. And these people want to run high-speed rail between Chicago & St. Louis? How would you like to be stranded in whoop-whoop with the "sucks to be you" attitude. Once upon a time, once you bought a ticket, whomever you were traveling with made every effort to see you made your destination. Or put you up if they couldn't make arrival.

Keep this in mind if you want to travel by rail. Make sure you buy travel insurance, hate to see anyone's vacation ruined.

(I can't quote two posts so I chose the latter one.)

European rail services, even those that are in private hands, are heavily subsidised by the state.

Privatisation of British Rail into separate private franchises operated regionally by different companies

has certainly resulted in newer rolling stock but fares are expensive and the trains overcrowded.

Recent experience of other European countries' rail services is limited but I have been impressed by

Germany's services (DB).

(KSA is an aid donor and the USA has benefitted enormously from huge arms sales recently, according to

online sources.)
