An IWD is just a zip file and it holds mostly images (iwi) and sounds.

I thought iwd was the computers name for call of duty.... When call of duty is open for me and I look at "running programs" that's the name of the process.

as Sammy the Mammy said, it holds images, custom textures you have in your map.

the minimap & loadscreen are held there, they could be any number of things custom textures, pictures yadda yadda.

They are images that are turned into IWI's and stored in the IWD for the map.

During the making of your map you would have the iwd located in the Activision/CallofCuty4-ModernWarfare/Mods/customMaps

so while you are making the map you could see the picture or whatever custom texture(s) however at this point I do not think you are ready

for that yet and remeber the minimap & loadscreen are the last things you will do before you roll your map out!

technically speaking .iwd stands for infinityward its just their own file type... all information for the game to run are in these files... so thats why we pack our maps with all files into a zip .iwd...
