Well, I am at wits end with this and fear I'm all done with COD2. A couple weeks ago, with no recent installs, changes or anytthing to my PC, I started getting an incredible lag in COD2 only. My mic also started acting strange, muting itself. I since thin kI've figured out why the mic was acting up - a broken wire in the headset.

Anyway, lag continued so I made the mistake of re-installing the game. Previously the game was installed when I had Windows 7 and has played well for YEARS! Last year, I upgraded to Windows10 and did not need to do anything to COD2 - it ran fine all this time, until two weeks ago when the lag started. Now, I am unable to even install COD2. I have tried every compatibilty and it either fails the install before complete or if it does install, crashes upon started the game with an "program stopped working" error.

I don't even know what to do next. This has been the most stable, problem free game through the years and now I can't even get a successful install. Any of you using Windows 10 know what might be going on here? What compatibility should I be using? Appreciate any input on what t otry next. Thank goodness World at War is fine!

Same as before Laz do not use autorun but rather go to the setup in the drive and run as admin with xp pack3 mode

Install game then run patch 1.3

make sure to turn off any antivirus and your firewall 1st too

Once you have the install complete you will need to change your hunkmegs to 512 and can be found in your 28 folder once you have downloaded our mod

Should be Seta com hunk megs "160" but change 160 "default" to 512 and save...

In saying all this make sure to have a headset plugged in the headphone jack not usb and you may have to open your audio and set your sound to realtek

REPORT BACK

If you should need any other help let me know I have Macdaddy with a problem as well his is crashing and then he has to reboot to get back to desktop

@loader , I did change the setup exe for xp, sp3 compatibilty, not use the autorun - tried every compatibilty! Not sure if each case I set AS ADMIN, so I'll try again with XP and turn off Windows Defender. Didn't know about the hunk meg thing though, so once I get 1.2 to even work, I'll go from there - 1.3 and hunk thing. Very frustrating and afraid I'm going to fuck something else up!!

Like the mic. Thought it had to be mic, but tried another and same issue. Sometime a few seconds and sometimes minutes, but something hijacks conterol of JUST THE mic and mutes it. Can turn back on with  ASUS Realtek control that came with it, unmute and work short while, then mute itself again. All driver updated, video drivers included. I think some fucking Windows update changed something affecting old games! COD5 is just fine, less the sound.

Sometimes get a DirectX message and crashes install, but I thought game install DirectX it needs?.

May be it was the same thing that screws up my mic and made COD2 go to extreme lag mode!!

Fuck, fuck, fuck!! Miss my weekend TDM!! Waaaahhhhh!

Thanks Loader!

And now it's worse, so no COD2 for a while! Now when I try to install, it tells me it want to do an UPGRADE, though the game and all folders are gone! Then when I say continue, it thinks I have newer version already installed (1.3, I suppose). Oh boy!  I suspect something remains in a registry somewhere, but that's a needle in a haystack!

Hey Laz, I  had similar issues trying to install COD2  on Windows 10 using the original CD's I bought back in...2005 or 2006?...I got so pissed that I ended up buying and installing the game directly from Steam. It worked on my laptop but it didn't on my PC, so I went back to Win 7, which is a pain in the ass by itself for a number of reasons...hard to update,  unexpected crashes, mike not working  etc.   Hope you figure it out :-)
