Always this when running old games. Always do this. I've never had a problem with steam, and I've been using it for about 12 years now - and the only issue I get is when it says steam can't be found. But that's just an easy fix to throw some Steam dll files in the games directory and its rare that happens. Sadly, you need Steam open to play Steam bought games, and as mine is open all the time its no bother to me. Honestly, Laz, if you get any issues with Steam just let me know. Getting CoD2 to run on Steam can be problematic as there is a chance you will run into a bug that makes CoD2 open to a blank screen and not load further but that's mostly due to a graphical bug and the game just needs rebooting

or edit your desktop game .exe to the correct drive letter and need same game version that XI is using

If it's on steam then it will be in steam/steamapps/common You should see cod 2 there. Open the folder and find COD2.exe (I think) right click and select create shortcuts. It will make the shortcut in that folder. Drag it and drop it onto your desktop. Now you should have a direct shortcut for the game, and a game of that age won't need steam to be running. I did the same thing for my cod 4, and that is on steam without steam running

Right-click shortcut - Show more options - Properties - Compatibility - Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3) - Apply

Laz this will help with login in with activision reason is 64bit OS just make a work around for you and Key53 for CoD5 then in search window type iis once open note it take time on Win 11 to load game but works

Thanks Kruch. I am only trying to play COD2 multiplayer. Again, It would NOT play on my original disks after updating to Win11. Also will not play unless headset was plugged in - another odd thing, but didn't care. For some reason, my account name, which the game is tied to, is OK, but when I tried to reset PW, I was told no such email. And yes, it was typed correctly, numerous times. Waiting on their tech support now. No playing today! We'll see what they say.

Laz with steam keep digital receipt to prove your the owner of games of any game buy. i had same issue of forgot PWD and heard others messed up the family account waited 6 months to get right again for Covid lay-offs, programers gave them finger. H Had same issue with rockstar games lost most of games no proof. now i make a hard copys of purchases. got Cod2 to run on win11

So, after I got a new operating system years ago, Windows10, my old disks no longer worked. So, after giving up, I purchased through Steam and haven't had too many issues and I never really use it, ever, except for COD2. But today when I went to play COD2 and it wouldn't run - it doesn't unless Steam is running. So, after I couldn't log in , did the usual "forgot password". When attempting to reset, it said "no account" with this PW. WTF?! Out of the blue, my account is gone. Is this a way to get you to buy again. And $19.99 for a game over 20 years old? So, waiting for them to "fix" whatever they broke! Sorry, had to vent. has anyone had this crap with Steam?

Thanks Pain. That dam map bluesea would mostly empty the server (except for about 5 of us ) It's the players responsibility to manage their own system. It's not that diffucult with an old ass game. I haven't been able to get to it because of work and my lack of good mental health (going back in to therapy) but I got myself to do it tonight. I have removed the offending map mp_bluesea and repaired the map pack. PLEASE NOTE: You will need to clear your CoD2 main folder of previous custom map packs until only the stock ones remain If you play on DM too, I will say you can leave those ones there, but please let me know of any further clashes. I will not be held responsible for you failing to clear out your CoD2 folder correctly either. I tend to name mine with the month first, then the game mode. This should prevent invalid .iwd clients; whilst I shouldn't have to remind people of this when I change a rotation, this one is partly on me for not saying when I changed the rotation. I've also colour coded this rotation, mostly for my own ease of viewing but you can see which maps are which modes at a glance. Long overdue, I know, but I have now done the winter rotation which will be in play until January 2025. This rotation will also be updated over time in regards to feedback such as maps being taken out or maps added. There is plenty of space for some more maps, and there are some maps in these packs that was in the last rotation. You WILL need to remove the sniper pack from last rotation to get the new pack. @KamikazePit Lost my hard drive, so upgraded to an SSD, which is great! However, since old COD2 CD installs don't work (direct 7 issue), installed via Steam as I did previously, but had the "black screen" issue below. This corrected it first time! Back in business, so thanks again Kami for this info I found in old comments (thought I'd seen something before). Like the last few years with old drive, multi only started with headset on. If not plugged in, game just closed, no error. But don't care so much about that one, since I always use headset (surround sound). Likely because I don't have an external microphone - only on the head set. Follow the instructions step by step. Start the Call of Duty 2 single player mode and create a new profile. Quit the game and return to the desktop. Open your Steam folder "C:\Steam\". Now copy the file "Steam.dll" and "Steam2.dll". Open the game directory where you installed Call of Duty² "C:\Steam\steamapps\cmmon\Call of Duty²\". Paste here the .dll files you copied before. Right-click on CoD2MP_s.exe, select Properties, select the Compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP Service Pack 3" In the lower right corner of the screen, right-click the "Volume Mixer/Speaker Icon" and select "Recording Devices". Make sure your "default device", usually the "microphone", is ENABLED and also physically connected; if you don't have a microphone, your speakers will suffice. You may also need to copy AppOverlay.dll and AppOverlay64.dll if you want to use the Steam overlay.

I've been busy all week so I have not had the chance to check in on this one. I am glad that the changes we have trialled went well on Sunday, and I am all for seeing how it goes over an entire weekend. If anything crops up that comes to attention, I am hoping that it can be addressed swiftly and without issue!

Pain, Today, on the TDM server it worked well as we discussed. Our hope is that it works better for all on the server. It will make a big inpact for the CTF maps for sure. Of course there may (will) be people trying to test the will, but as we said there will always be recourse if needed. Nice work Pain!

Good evening folks, Just passing this your way but I am going to try a couple of things in the server as a trial I want to look at fixing the issue we have with Auto Balance. Currently, the server sets people into teams as soon as they join the server, and then scrambles it again in the next map; auto selecting peoples teams, even the spectators. What this means is that the server will try to auto balance spectators. The idea that I propose is to turn off the team auto-select, meaning that you can now choose your own teams. This stops the server from giving you a team automatically, and it should then stop the auto-balance not moving people around. However, there is a down-side to this; this will invite team stacking. People want to play with their mates, which is great and all but it can end up with teams being 6-4 etc. I would like to think that people have the decency to still choose auto select. To combat this inevitability, the server will check every 15 seconds if the teams are balanced and if not, it will move someone. Again, if it moves someone and they move themselves back to where they used to be, I will warn you. If you do it again, I will kick you. It may end up moving people all the time, but this is something I want to try out at least. This will be live for tomorrow, and will run for tomorrow to see how it goes. I have also added some new sniper maps to the server, which will break it up a bit more because I was using old maps from old rotations. Hope to see you all tomorrow!

Alot of older games do not like any sort of Overlays running in the background. Could you create a desktop shortcut to the COD2MP.exe file and launch it from there without running Steam?
